Agricamping Monte Muras di Serrano

On the western coast of Sardinia, 20 minutes’ drive from the town of Cabras, Agricamping Monte Muras di Serrano is a peaceful site on a 44-acre farm. The nearest beach, Spiaggia di Muras, is only about 250 metres away – that’s less than a five-minute walk, after which you will be able to kick off your flip-flops and start paddling in the crystal-clear waters that the island is famed for. Relaxing on the sand (or in the sea) is the main activity around these parts, but that doesn’t mean you can’t spend some time hiking along the coastline, which shelters splendid beaches like Is Arutas and Mari Ermi (both 20 minutes on foot), with their unusual sand made of tiny quartz fragments. Of course, watersports are also popular. If you brought your snorkel with you, you’ll be treated to underwater spectacles like banks of posidonia grass and schools of fish flitting about. If you prefer to stay above water, you can rent a paddleboard or learn to kitesurf at San Giovanni di Sinis (20 minutes’ drive). The site falls within the Sinis Peninsula, a protected area of sandy dunes and salt marshes. Birdwatchers should not forget their binoculars: lagoons like Stagno di Càbras (20 minutes) and Laguna di Mistras (half an hour) are inhabited by pink flamingos, cormorants and kingfishers. Barbecues are provided, and the site comes with showers, a toilet block and a parent-and-baby washroom, plus a washing-up area and recycling facilities.

The Area Marina Protetta Penisola del Sinis-Isola di Mal di Ventre is a large reserve that includes quartz beaches, vertiginous cliffs and archeological sites like Tharros (25 minutes’ drive), with the ruins of a Phoenician city from the seventh century BC. If you’re into motorcycle riding, you might want to check out the calendar at Crossodromo Comunale Le Dune (half an hour). With any luck, your visit might coincide with a thrilling off-road event on this highly technical race track. For a round of golf accompanied by gentle coastal breezes, head to the 18-hole Is Arenas Golf & Country Club (half an hour), where you can tee off among pine and juniper trees.
