It’s all about the easy life at Família Camping Balaton, a quiet site on the southern shore of Lake Balaton in the Somogy county settlement of Balatonőszöd. This family-friendly site spreads out over 1.7 acres, so there’s plenty of space to relax, whether you’d like to take a nap in the shade of the trees, relax in the small pool on site or wander down to the free beach 600 metres away for a swim or a spot of sunbathing. Thanks to its gently sloping shoreline, the beach is a great place for kids to paddle and for families to spend a day or few – perhaps playing a game of beach volleyball or football or hiring pedaloes to explore a little further from shore. A playground, ping pong table, chess table and water basketball area are on hand too, so you’re unlikely to get bored… although it’s also perfectly possible to do very little here other than chill out on the eight-hectare lakefront space if you like… Everything has been set up to be nice and convenient back at the site – pitches have access to a launderette, chemical disposal point and washing-up area along with a modern bathroom block that’s got separate male and female toilets and showers. The site has wifi, For eats, it’s an easy walk to local restaurants on the waterfront or in the neighbouring villages of Balatonszárszó and Balatonszemes. If you’d rather cook, pick up supplies in the shops and head back to site, where there’s a well-equipped kitchen and an outdoor cooking area with barbecues, as well as garden pavilions and a firepit. Those towns are handy for their train and boat stations too, if you’re travelling on public transport, but it’s also straightforward to arrive by road (from the M7 motorway) or bike (from the lakeside cycle path). Taste some Hungarian wines at the traditional inn 10 minutes' drive away too.

It’s lovely to spend a good chunk of time at the beach, of course, but there’s a whole lot more to see around Lake Balaton – it is, after all, the largest lake in central Europe, and a famously pretty part of the world. One of the best ways to see some of it is by bike, following the cycle path that goes round the lake, but there are plenty of hiking trails around too. For splendid views of the lake, take an outing to the 45-metre-tall Siofok Water Tower (20 minutes’ drive) or the Lookout of Balatonföldvár (10 minutes) – or cross to the other side of the lake on a boat from Szántód (15 minutes) to have a wander around the medieval town of Tihany and visit the vineyards around the Badacsony region. And how about Szántódpusztai Majorság (15 minutes), a manor with hiking trails and horse-riding too? One of the grandest days out around here is to the Festetics Palace (40 minutes), a huge Baroque palace with lots of elegant exhibits and a large parkland with French and English gardens and a wilder nature reserve.
