‘Belle’ is perhaps something of an understatement to describe the views from Cabanes et Lodges du Belvédère – check pics for confirmation that something along the lines of ‘stunning’ would be rather more appropriate...
The folk who set up this gorgeous glamping site on a rural spot in the Rhône-Alpes certainly agree that the outlook is very fine indeed – and they’ve made the most of it by ensuring that all the balconies at their wooden units aim towards the Ain river. Being in an elevated position at 350 metres on the slopes of Mount Bétet means that the gorgeous views stretch way off into the countryside beyond; the more immediate woodland views are pretty fine too, with wildlife to be spotted all around.
The views may be utterly fab but the interiors are worth checking out too: each unit has its own kitchenette, bathroom and living area with comfy seating and a TV, along with heating to keep things cosy. Supplies for self catering (and drinks for evenings on the balcony...) can be picked up at the shops in Serrières-sur-Ain and Poncin, both about 10 minutes away by car.
Time to tear yourselves from the view? Hikes, horse riding, climbing, canoeing and mountain bike routes are all within a 15-minute drive for outdoorsy types; caves, a château and wine tastings are similarly close by for those seeking something more leisurely. Day trips to Lyon, Geneva and Bourg-en-Bresse are easily doable too.

Those river views calling you to get closer? Canoe trips for peaceful paddling days are 15 minutes away by car. If you’ve got other outings in mind, point yourselves towards Poncin for horse riding or Neuville-sur-Ain for climbing excursions (both 10 minutes away), or get over to Pont-d’Ain (15 minutes) for go-karting.
If that all sounds a tad too much effort, make tracks to the river beach on Île Chambod (15 minutes) – it’s also got boat trips and various watersports for those that require a little activity. Or raise a glass to inactivity by taking a tour of the sparkling wine cellars around Cerdon (10 minutes).
Take a look into the region’s history with a scamper around Château de Varey (15 minutes) or taking a jaunt to Jujurieux (15 minutes), where you can see silk makers in action and visit a museum dedicated to their art. For history that’s way more ancient, get underground at the Grottes du Cerdon (20 minutes) before returning to daylight for prehistory-themed activities.
