Beaujolais for the red drinkers, Mâcon-Villages for those who prefer a white… you’re very firmly in wine-producing territory at Camping de la Chalaronne, with heaps of top-notch producers easily accessed from this handy location in the village of Saint-Didier-sur-Chalaronne. One could easily spend many a day pottering around the many local vineyards and producers, stopping for fine foodie foraging as you wend your way along the wine route. Such activity is not highly recommended for those travelling en famille, however, so those with nippers in tow will be chuffed to hear of plenty of family-friendly activities nearby too: an animal park, château trails and waterskiing should hopefully go some way towards keeping the smalls happy. Staying on site for a bit may well please the small sorts as well, with games of table tennis and pétanque to play, and assorted activities arranged for them in the summer months. Meanwhile, those who appreciate the joys of sitting quietly for a bit can take a rod to the Chalaronne river in search of carp, perch and catfish. Not been successful with catching your dinner? No matter – the site’s restaurant serves up a range of tasty fare and sweet treats out on the terrace, and it’s only a few minutes’ amble into town for more restaurants, a supermarket and a bakery.

喜欢: Very friendly staff, lovely location right by a stream, bar/restaurant, short walk into town and good supermarket (selling cheap diesel). Not far off motorway so good overnight stop between Calais and Provence.

喜欢: EVERYTHING!!! The toilets were thoroughly cleaned every morning, showers hots and powerful, and even had a hairdryer in the block. The staff could not have been kinder or more helpful, and the river running next to the site gave us hours of nature watching.

不喜欢: Nothing, we stayed 3 nights longer...

喜欢: Wir waren 6 Wochen in Spanien und Frankreich unterwegs. Dieser Platz war einer der schönsten Plätze, die wir kennengelernt haben. Überaus freundliches Personal! Saubere sanitäre Anlagen. Im Sommer muss es herrlich sein. Im Dorf gibt es Einkaufsmöglichkeiten. Mit dem Fahrrad durch die Dörfer in der Gegend fahren und das ursprüngliche Burgund kennenlernen. Dies heben wir uns auf. Leider waren wir nur eine Nacht dort, da wir auf der Rückreise waren. Bei nächsten Mal nehmen wir uns für diesen Platz mehr Zeit.

喜欢: Was quiet when we were there on way to Sardinia. Lots of good sized pitches. Facilities block was clean and warm. Good laundry area. Short walk to shops and a good supermarket with fuel on the way in. Will return on the way back up hopefully.

喜欢: Moeilijke aankomst. Eenrichting wegen door klein dorpje maar wel te doen. Afreis is makkelijker. Vriendelijke ontvangst en mochten zelf plaats uitzoeken, omdat het hier en daar nog vochtig was. (1 mei eerste dag open) voor een overnachting camping wel te doen.

Those who appreciate a glass of vino or few will no doubt wish to visit a couple of vineyards while in the area – there are plenty within a few kilometres, including several that you could cycle to in around half an hour. Proper hardcore wine buffs can take in the whole of the 140-kilometre Beaujolais Wine Route for a more in-depth insight into the area’s offerings. Folks holidaying with the famille will no doubt wish to limit such endeavours and consider instead days out at Touroparc Zoo, 10 minutes’ drive from the site, or the excellent Bird Park half an hour away in Villars-les-Dommes. More adventurous types can have a go at waterskiing or wakeboarding in Mâcon, half an hour’s drive from the site. For a bit of history on your hols, Cluny Abbey, Château de Corcelles and medieval Chatillon-sur-Chalaronne are all within a 45-minute drive.
