Fans of water-based holiday antics, splash your way over to Domaine du Couriou, a family-friendly rural place on the edge of Vercors Regional Natural Park.
Central to the site is a huge 1000m² waterpark made up of a couple of swimming pools, a paddling pool and three waterslides… and there’s more aquatic activity to be had down on the Drôme river which flows a few minutes’ walk away. Nearby stretches of the river have some splendid natural pools to swim in, while others are prime territory for fishing, canoeing, kayaking and whitewater rafting.
Back on site, get yourself towelled off and prepped for a bit of practice ahead of the weekly pétanque contest, or join with family and friends on the multisports pitch for games of football, basketball or volleyball. Meanwhile, a playground and a daily rota of summer-holiday activities should keep les enfants suitably amused for some time ahead of the evening parties (all of which keep pleasingly family-friendly hours to avoid overtired small sorts).
For eats, follow the scent of freshly baked pizza to take you to the snack bar, where tables on the terrace have some smashing scenic views to provide a backdrop for your dinner or aperitifs. (That waft of baking hangs around in the mornings too, enticing hungry folks to pick up their fresh bread and pastries for brekkie.) For DIY caterers, there’s a grocery store on site in high season, and another a 10-minute stroll away.

Pack your swimmers and head down the Drôme to Le Claps 10 minutes’ drive away, a great spot for splashing in the waters, clambering over the rocks and setting up for a picnic. There’s good whitewater rafting a little further north between Pont de Quart and Saillans, and site staff can also advise on where to head for fishing, canoeing and canyoning.
Stray away from the river for walks in Vercors Regional Natural Park, a few minutes away by car: take your pick from mountain hikes, rambles in France’s largest pine forest and gentle strolls through vineyards and lavender fields.
For a different way to see the area, consider heading to Acro’parc Aventure 15 minutes away, to zoom through the treetops on a zipline. Or take it a bit more gently by hiking through the countryside in the placid company of a donkey companion.
