Family getaway in the countryside or by the sea? With a stay at Camping Le Domaine de Bernezac, on the edge of Charente-Maritime’s Saint-Palais-sur-Mer, you’ll have no need to choose, as the site is in a spot that's pleasingly leafy and yet just five minutes’ walk from Nauzan beach on the Atlantic Ocean. With something of a low-key, chilled vibe, the site has lots of thoughtful amenities to make family holidays easy: coin-operated washing machines and dryers, a baby room with changing mats, and washing-up sinks for all your pots and pans. Entertainment-wise, there’s plenty going on, with weekly themed parties for the kids and the communal screening of major sports events. The library/TV lounge has books and games aplenty for days when you want to curl up on a comfy sofa, and should you need inspiration for things to see and do nearby, head to reception for brochures and friendly advice from the staff. While you’re there, pick up fresh bread and pastries daily from the grocery counter; for a more major stock-up, the food shops of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer are 15 minutes’ walk away. Back at the site, any self-caterers can grill up a feast at the shared on-site barbecue area, which has a a seafood prep area (oysters are a local speciality) and alfresco seating. If you’re simply not cooking while on holiday, all manner of crêperies, burger joints and cafés are on hand in Saint-Palais-sur-Mer too.

Time to get active? The golden-sand beach at Nauzan (five minutes’ walk) catches the Atlantic breeze and is popular for windsurfing, dinghy sailing and body boarding. Cycling and walking tracks back the beaches, and riders can canter horses through the waves or wend their way along forest tracks (10 minutes’ drive). To see how the famous oysters of the Marennes-Oléron region are cultivated, head for the Réserve Naturelle de Moêze-Oléron (45 minutes) and Cité de l’Huître (40 minutes) to stroll around the marshy pools where they grow, learn about traditional farming methods and perhaps taste a few samples in the alfresco café. From there it’s a short hop across the bridge to the Île d’Oléron (35 minutes from the site) to discover more oyster beds on the east coast, as well as military landmarks like the imposing Citadelle du Château (45 minutes) and the offshore Fort Boyard – take a boat trip to see it from Port de Saint-Denis d’Oléron (an hour). If the kids have put up with all this history and culture, reward them with a day out at Zoo La Palmyre (15 minutes) with its big cats, pink flamingos and comical penguins.

喜欢: It was right on the coast. Walk to end of site through the gate over the road to the beach. Fantastic. The site itself was was nice a lot of statics but clean and tidy. Supermarket was in walking distance for us (about a kilometre) as we were in a Motorhome with no other transport. Next day, Sunday went the other way found next village with shops, restaurants, bars and a market with lots of fresh foods. Had a lovely time walking around. We decided to stay another night and have another day at the beach
