Looking for a lovely lakeside location? With easy access to swims and watersports for the times you (and/or your small sorts) are feeling active? And plenty of serene spots in which to relax for the times when you’re not feeling in active at all? It’s a tick, tick and thrice tick then for Les Rives du Lac du Laouzas, a rural Tarn site right by the water’s edge, with fab views out over the aforementioned lake (and the equally scenic mountains behind it) and but a few minutes’ trot from a leisure centre offering all manner of aquatic activities. A playground and tennis courts are on site for those who require activity closer to home; those who’d rather a bit of chillout time should scoot the family over to the open-air pool or escape to the peaceful relaxation area for a massage or a sauna-and-spa sesh. For eats, there’s a restaurant a short stroll away, and several more within a 15-minute drive. There’s also heaps of space on site for mighty scenic picnics or barbecues.

Many an hour can be spent happily messing about in/on/by the water here. Wander along the lake shore for a few minutes to get to a supervised swimming area and a watersports centre that’ll rent you all the kit you need for sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking. Those in need of a bit of help to get them started can sign up for coaching or courses here too. Other outdoorsy options include staying by the lake to fish for perch, pike, trout and carp, or taking a 20-minute drive to the hiking trails around Monts de Lacaune, the via ferrata climbing routes at La Salvetat-sur-Agout or a riding centre where you can sign up for pony treks or forest rides. A little further away at around an hour’s drive are the Bishops Palace in Castres (designed by the Palace of Versailles’ architect) and the famed cheese caves of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon.
