Perhaps you’re on the indecisive side, or maybe you thrive on variety when on hols – either way, if you’ve got a lengthy wishlist, here’s a place that should prove suitable all round. Pyrénées-Orientales site Camping les Casteillets is one of those sites that can certainly claim to have it all – it’s a peaceful rural spot surrounded by mountain and river views, and yet it’s an easy 10-minute stroll to get to shops, restaurants and the like in Saint-Jean-Pla-de-Corts. Those mountain views (correctly) hint that this may well be a fine place for a country hike, but if you tire of such scenery it will only take around half an hour to drive over to the coast for beach days at Argelès-Plage or strolls around arty Collioure. Such drives (and lengthier ones for arrivals/farewells) are fairly straightforward, as the site’s a couple of kilometres from Le Boulou, where several motorways intersect. And if you’d like to roam without driving, there’s a bus stop in town where you can continue your adventures without having to factor in such things as parking. The excellent location hasn’t encouraged the folk here to skimp on facilities, though – the site has a heated open-air pool, space for games of football, volleyball, tennis and pétanque, and a bar-restaurant that organises theme nights and takeaway meals. Come along in summer and they also run a small grocery store and bread service for easy eats, and all sorts of activities for all ages by day and night.

Lovely big pitches, gravel or earth, with trees for privacy.

喜欢: So peaceful & charming. The village is very close to local shops & restaurants.

Nice big pitch with an amazing view. Everything is very clean & well-maintained.

不喜欢: No fresh bread or eggs in the site shop, a poor selection.

喜欢: The people around us were friendly. None spoke English, but between us we managed to get round it. Comment would fit in with most of the people we've meet in France.

不喜欢: Site is non suitable for tents! It says gravel and sand more like concrete. I am a experience camper so had hard pegs so managed to get tent to stay up for the one night needed.
Gentleman on front desk, spoke little English and was not very interested in the facts. It was 5.30 and he was finishing at 6.we know as when back at 5.55 and he'd buggered off. Was unable to eat as couldnt find food outlet. But states there was a restaurant on site. Have cancelled our return journey stay at this site. Booked in at camping les Casteillets.

不喜欢: Los sanitarios estaban sucios. Los de caballeros estaban cerrados y tuvimos que compartir los de mujeres para todo el camping. Había cacas de perro por el camping, y mal olor.
Algunos campistas no respetaban las horas de silencio.

喜欢: We waren blij dat we nog eten konden bestellen bij latere aankomst.... zwembad lekker voor verkoeling

不喜欢: Bij aankomst was eigenaar onduidelijk. Dacht te begrijpen dat we op de parkeerplaats moesten overnachten maar een vriendelijke, Engelse dame die er woont legde uit dat we het park opmochten. Eigenaar of ander personeel niet aanwezig voor uitleg oid.
Bar personeel kwam chagerijnig/wat arrogant over, wederom geen woord over de grens sprekend of iig proberend dus lastig te
communiceren.
Was enkel voor 1 overnachting, dat was prima, denk dat je er niet veel langer wil verblijven...

Prefer your swims in cooler, wilder water? Stroll straight out from the site onto the banks of Le Tech river for walks followed by dips in the water. Alternatively, walk for half an hour (or drive for five minutes) to Les Lacs de Saint-Jean-Pla-de-Corts for swims, madcap scrambles across floating inflatables, waterskiing and pedaloes (plus a tree-climbing park if you’d rather stay dry for a while). Yet more swims can be had half an hour’s drive away, at the stretch of coast known as the Côte Vermeille. You’ll probably aim for Argelès-Plage for access to the sands and sea, but it’s also worth planning to venture to Collioure to see its castle, Fort Saint-Elme and the harbour that inspired painters including Matisse and Picasso. Both of those artists (along with Chagall, Dufy and other greats) also liked hanging out in Céret (10 minutes’ drive) – as a result, the town now has an excellent contemporary art museum. If you’re more into food than fine art, the town’s still worth a visit for its Saturday market, especially during the area’s famed cherry-growing season.
