When you can drag the kids away from the swimming complex, there are more watery treats nearby in the shape of cruises on a traditional wooden sailing boat from the Center Nautique de Plouhinec (20 minutes’ drive). You can also make ferry crossings from Sainte-Évette (25 minutes) to rugged little Île de Sein to eat in seafood restaurants and walk off the calories with strolls around the colourful harbourside cottages. Time to squeeze some Breton heritage into your schedule? Labelled one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France’, Locronan (25 minutes) is packed with stately, granite-built houses with ornate gables, all overlooked by a fine 15th-century church with jewel-coloured stained-glass windows. Other architecturally important churches in the region include those at Pont-Croix (15 minutes) and Pleyben (40 minutes), both well-worth checking out. If you’re off sightseeing in medieval Quimper (25 minutes), be sure to have a wander through Locmaria old quarter, where cobbled streets are lined with boutiques selling pretty Breton pottery, and then go on to spot works by Rubens and Gauguin at the Musée des Beaux-Arts.
