Seeking a rural retreat? Somewhere with a slower pace of life, where you can while away the hours swimming, fishing and birdwatching surrounded by gorgeous greenery? Behold Camping Les Murmures du Lignon, a peaceful place in four acres of protected woodland on the banks of the Lignon river.
Days drift by here in a haze of gentle activity (or none, if you prefer – there are plenty of shaded spots for snoozes). Settle down by the river with a rod or venture into the shallows for a paddle to keep cool… or dive into the outdoor pool while les petits happily splash in the paddling pool. Energetic offspring also have playground to amuse themselves with, and a games room with table tennis, billiards, table football and assorted toys and games.
Site staff can hook you up with kids’ club activities at the local leisure centre (allowing your small ones to ditch the parents for a day or a half-day). While they're off doing that, you can organise a visit from a beautician, hairdresser or masseur to coiffe, buff and pummel you into pristine shape… and follow it up with a bite to eat from the daily menu of local dishes at the restaurant.
Les Murmures du Lignon's local town is Tence, five minutes' drive away or reachable via a peaceful 20-minute riverside amble. No need for early-morning outings though, as the site’s bread service can deliver your fresh baguettes and pastries in time for brekkie, and a small grocery shop is to hand here too.

It’s not all about complete idleness around here – far from it, in fact, with canoeing, kayaking and horse riding among the activities in the surrounding villages and in the Monts D'Ardèche Regional Nature Park about half an hour's drive away.
Scenic trips on the Velay Express steam train are a good way to see some of your surroundings without troubling your legs too much: the trains run from the station in Tenc through forests and meadows up to a mountain plateau of more than 1,000 metres. If you’d like to put a little more effort in, consider a trip on the Vélorail Velay 20 minutes away to pedal along a disused railway line through the forest.
Also worth a visit is Le Puy-en-Velay – drive there in 45 minutes or so to visit the Château de Bouzols, see the chapel built on a huge craggy outcrop overlooking the town and wander the streets of the historic lacemaking quarter.
