Tucked into two hectares of beech forest at an altitude of 1,000 metres and with spectacular views of Allier’s verdant Monts de la Madeleine, this peaceful spot suits anyone looking for a complete break from 21st-century trials and tribulations.
You’re guaranteed a warm welcome from owners Alain and Corinne, who provide a wood-fired mobile hot tub (except July and August) for relaxing in forest surroundings. They also serve communal meals every Thursday evening in summer; otherwise there’s a small site shop for daily bread needs and local produce, which you can cook on the shared barbecues. Otherwise, make a beeline for wholesome snacks and drinks at the terrace bar.
At Camping Les Myrtilles, there are no noisy entertainment options. Borrow books or games from reception, potter around admiring the mountain views or have a dip in the pool. You can supervise youngsters at the playground and then indulge in family competition on the multi-sports court, while further afield, hiking and mountain biking aficionados have direct access to trails crisscrossing unspoiled Auvergne landscapes.

Ski resort La Loge des Gardes (10 minutes’ drive) morphs into a walking and cycling hub in summer, with a rail toboggan run and some 20 marked mountain bike trails in the surrounding peaks. Serious hikers can also head to Pierre Châtel (10 minutes) to face challenging rocky climbs leading to spectacular views of the Monts de la Madeleine.
For a fun family day out, make for Saint Clément Aventure (20 minutes), with spectacular zipwires crossing Lake Besbre, or Cimes Aventure (15 minutes), which has treetop rope routes and obstacle courses suitable for all ages and experience. Other options include fairground rides at Parc Le Pal (about an hour), where you can also take safari tours to see tigers, lions and elephants.
For some grown-up downtime, sneak off to Vichy (50 minutes) for a restorative treatment in one of the town’s many spas and thermal baths. Rejuvenation complete, treat yourselves to a gourmet supper at a River Loire-side brasserie in historic Roanne (35 minutes).
