Active families can access walking trails in the surrounding area directly from the holiday park, as well as flat cycling routes heading along the waterways, or through nature reserves like Winkelsbroek and De Liereman (both 35 minutes’ drive or an hour and a half by bike). Left the bikes at home? That’s no excuse, as you can rent them on site. But the region round Mol isn’t all about getting active; there’s plenty of cultural stuff as well. Visit Postel Abbey (15 minutes) to see how the monks have lived since 1140, wander the well-maintained gardens and buy their artisan beer and cheese, or tour the meditation gardens dotted with contemporary sculpture Herkenrode Abbey (45 minutes). Art lovers might like to dip into the Flemish landscape paintings at the Jakob Smitsmuseum (10 minutes), while the lovely old city of Hasselt (50 minutes) rewards a trip with ponds full of koi carp in the colourful Japanese Garden, a Romanesque cathedral and shops selling the local speciality, genever gin. Kids getting bored? Teach them about endangered big cats and monkeys at Pakawi Park (20 minutes).
