Halls Gap Zoo (five minutes’ drive) is home to more than 150 species of animals – both native to Australia (wallabies, kangaroos, Tasmanian devils) and exotic (red pandas, cheetahs, alligators). They also run a number of animal experiences, so this is the place to visit if you want to pet a dingo, feed a giraffe or have meerkats climb all over you. You don’t have to believe in ghosts (though it probably helps…) to book a place on the spooktacular Aradale Ghost Tours, Ararat Lunatic Asylum (40 minutes). The setting alone (a former mental hospital) is enough to give anyone chills – but the place is really brought to life when coupled with the harrowing, haunting stories of its residents (narrated by theatrical guides). One for birdwatchers: between July and April, Point Danger Gannet Colony (two hours and 20 minutes) becomes a nesting ground for these seabirds. This is the only mainland gannet colony in Australia, and you can watch as the birds rear their chicks, fledge and dive into the waters looking for food.
