Welsh river and Welsh wanders: small and friendly Tafarn-Y-Garreg Campsite is a riverside site in the Brecon Beacons National Park, with direct access to the Beacons Way footpath, the 95-mile trail meandering through the park up to the highest peak in the Black Mountains, Fan-Brycheiniog, and the glacier lakes of the Beacons. And as you might wish when staying in such a walkable place, Tafarn-Y-Garreg has a cosy pub too… It's a mountain-style chalet serving a wide range of fine brews such as lagers, ales and ciders to have in front of the fire after a long day's hike. The field is shaded by trees and is a short stroll from the site amenities of a portable toilet and a shower hut (showers are free but might not be available through the winter months); flushing toilets are across the road in the pub. And as you might also wish on a site with a wild camping vibe such as this, campfires are fully encouraged, so do bring along bagfuls of marshmallows and several packs of sausages.

不喜欢: Well where do I start - It’s quite simple really, if you have a camper/motorhome avoid this overpriced junk yard like the plague.

The management/staff are shockingly rude but if you don’t mind them accusing you of not booking and then invading your personal space and looking inside your van to see if there is anyone else there then book away.

I’ve never had the misfortune of dealing with such intimidating and rude people in my life.

I have never in all my years stayed in such an inhospitable place, £15 a night to stay in a car park with junk, a skip and rubbish all around.

Just book elsewhere, is my only advice!

喜欢: Beautiful setting, lovely friendly pub. Shame facilities can't be upgraded but that's the trade off being inside a national park. Pub wasn't doing food as it was early in the season but happily gave us details of a local takeaway and offered us a table in the pub to eat it. Couldn't ask for more. Loved the locals, think we chatted to half the pub!

喜欢: Lovely quiet site situated just off the main road so was really nice and easy to find. Pitched right next to the stream which was really nice but you have the choice to pitch wherever you want so can decide for yourself if you want to be closer to the car park or stream. Pub is straight across the road from the site, very cozy place for a drink. Site is sort of in a valley so views of hillsides all around, absolutely gorgeous to wake up to. Would definitely come back.

喜欢: Location is amazing. Beautiful walks and views surrounding.

不喜欢: There was no person to speak to on check in or check out. No idea who they were. Pub was closed at 7pm on Friday when we arrived. We just took a punt and went through the gate (labelled private) and parked up. The pub DOES NOT serve food in the evening despite advertising they do on the website and there is no where close which does serve food. Be aware and take some with you!! No facilities - simply a car park with a couple of abandoned cars.

Are you a superhero fan? Have a heroic hike up to the nearby Henrhyd Falls, the highest waterfall in south Wales and used as the cover for the Batcave in The Dark Knight Rises. (It's easy to find from here: ask the amiable Tafarn-Y-Garreg Campsite owner to point you on your way.) Slightly more gently, Tafarn-Y-Garreg has direct access to the 95 miles of the Beacons Way, running through the national park up to the mountains via woodland, moorland and farmland. It's a trail for experienced hikers and is only waymarked on the woodland stretches, so bring a compass and an Ordnance Survey map of the Brecon Beacons National Park if you want to give it a serious tackle. The 11 miles of the Dan-yr-Ogof Caves or National Showcaves Centre for Wales are under a mile away. Once named as the greatest natural wonder in Britain, the caves are now part of a big family complex with dinosaurs, a shire horse centre and farm, playgrounds and more. For a bit of fishing, head to the fly fishing of the Crai Reservoir, a wild brown trout fishery with full access to its stony banks.
