River and reflexology, whisky and waterfalls, red kites and fishing and a remote location with easy access to roads for urban day trips… some places really do have pretty much everything. Or almost – you won’t find a clubhouse, pizza joint or noisy entertainment at family-run Riverside Caravan Park, but if you’re camping in the Scottish Highlands you’re probably going to be erring on the quieter side of peaceful. And you’re probably up for some stunning Scottish scenery too – have a look at the site pics for a quick peek. Riverside is next to the River Blackwater, flowing into the River Contin, a popular pull for salmon and trout anglers from Scotland and further afield. (Fishing is available too on the Blackwater from the site – just be sure to catch and release.) Munro mountains rise minutes from the park for hillwalking and 'Munro bagging' (climbing all the Munro peaks in one fell swoop/tired-legged trip), and mountain bike trails start just over the road from Riverside if you prefer to go at a more breakneck speed. To sort supplies, the well-stocked and reasonably priced village shop is right at the site entrance and fresh bread and pastries are sold on site most mornings during busy seasons. A garage/petrol station and hotel with bar and restaurant are about a mile away. And you’ll probably need a rest now. Which is why it's true that some places really do have pretty much everything: there’s an on-site holistic therapist at Riverside, offering reiki, reflexology, Karuna and metamorphic technique, and occasional workshops in drumming, meditation and more. It's a hard life…

喜欢: The owners are helpful and can't do enough for you. The grounds are perfect with lots of room and very well kept. As for the facilities, they are a bit older but in great condition, well kept and very clean. The scenery is wonderful, gentle rolling river, lots of wild life and peaceful. My wife and I will make this site a regular stop and are looking forward to going back several times in the future.

喜欢: The view of the river and the local made pies at the small shop next door

不喜欢: Everything else. The site is NOT worth £35 a night! It’s dirty and dilapidated. The hosts T’s&C’s state you’re not allowed to complain after you have left! Everything must be dealt with when on site.

There were a load of dirty cheap white plastic chairs scattered along the riverbank and the shell of a slide for when kids were probably allowed. (Now no kids or dogs!) just a whole load of poor NC500 folk by the looks of things.

The loos need ripping down and rebuilding. The washing up area was right next to the toilet area on both men’s and womens sides. There was one shower for women and that was just creepy. My husband said the men’s was open at both ends of the door and the power and lighting was outside so anyone could have turned it off when you were in there.

喜欢: Fantastic, peaceful location right on the river with a choice of pitch. Staff were really friendly and helpful. The shop at the entrance was also very handy.

不喜欢: Facilities were quite basic but wouldn’t put us off staying there again.

喜欢: Beautiful sight with a stunning set up! The owners very much look after the pitches and it shows. A proper homely feel.

Coffee in the morning ready made was the perfect touch!

不喜欢: Ladies shower was cold and the room very small, ended up changing in the toilets after running round in a towel. Whereas men's was a nice hot shower.

I would dispute the statement saying shower was cold , all I can presume is you did not set the dials correctly , if this is really the case we would be having complaints everyday and this is the first time anybody has said the shower was cold.

喜欢: Lovely little campsite! We drove down from Inchnadamph area after a long day on mountains in bad weather and Martyn was very accommodating for us getting there quite late. He welcomed us at the gate, asked if we’d eaten and recommended the chippy a 5 minute walk down the road, which was just what we needed! He walked down and showed us where everything was and where we could pitch up.

The site is right by a lovely river and was just the right amount of busy. There are lots of amenities nearby which was welcomed after some wild camping and remote stays recently. There is lots of attractions nearby so plenty to do!

The showers are warm and there is plenty of space to do the washing up. A lovely stay and would recommend!

If you’ve any time left over after whisky trailing, fishing, climbing, mountain biking, wildlife watching or reflexology (really, it’s a hard life), there’s still a load to do around Riverside and the Scottish Highlands. Strathpeffer, Riverside’s nearest town, is well worth a look for its rather gorgeous golf course and the toys/exhibits of the Highland Museum of Childhood. Walk from the west end of Strathpeffer along the forest track to the hill of Cnoc Mor via the Pictish hill fort of Knock Farril, or drive a few miles from the town to visit Castle Leod originally a Pictish fort and now seat of the Mackenzie clan. A 24-hour mountain bike challenge starts each January from Strathpeffer too (yes, probably the one you saw on the news while you sat on the sofa polishing off the Christmas mince pies). And if you’re Loch Ness monster spotting on a day trip, pause for a few hours to Urquhart Castle on the loch’s shores, a medieval fortress and one of the biggest and most visited castles in Scotland.
