Folk come to the coast of Dumfries and Galloway for the peace and quiet, the castles and – if you opt for this particular spot just off the A75 – for access to a private sandy beach. Newton Campsite is a family-friendly site in a rural location with direct access to Scotland's southern seascapes and the scenic South West Coastal 300 driving route, all in a convenient location 15 minutes' drive from the popular towns of Kirkcudbright and Newton Stewart. The site is surrounded by fields and the pitches are just a short walk from the beach, where you can relax over a picnic or bring a kayak, bodyboard or wee sailboat and make your own oceangoing adventures. In the evening, head back to base to build a small fire in the designated spots, or bring your own firepit and spend the night enjoying sizzling snacks and gazing up at the stars. Newton Campsite has basic facilities only, including a waste-disposal point for toilet waste and a tap for fresh drinking water. Because of this, you'll need to bring your own toilet facilities (and all guests staying in tents are asked to bring their own toilet tent). The nearest set of shops is about four miles away, while Newton Stewart is where to head for bigger supermarkets and restaurants.

喜欢: One big field no amenities other than water and straight into beach. Weather was stunning and kids loved it. Really was wild camping will be back.

不喜欢: Nothing we knew what we were getting.

喜欢: The beautiful view, the space in the site. Right on the beach for easy access to the water.

不喜欢: It would be great if there were toilet facilities but most people came equipped with their own toilet tents etc.

喜欢: The views, the relaxation, close to beach and friendly staff

不喜欢: No toilet but wouldn’t put me off returning, the way some inconsiderate campers had fires and barbecues and left the grass burnt especially as the owner keeps the grass looking so good

喜欢: The site is a stunning beach side field, it was quiet up on the hill with great views across Fleet Bay. Allison, our host was a joy, said we could park anywhere and leave the following day at a time of our choosing. The very reasonable charge. I enjoyed my wander down and onto the sandy beach. Breathtaking, sorry to leave but we'll be back ! The lower part of the site was busy, lots of kayaks, wetsuit folk and a sailing catamaran. Some folk looked as if they were staying for weeks !

不喜欢: If you disliked this site then you would have been in the wrong place! We loved it !
Only discovered the following day that we could have bought firewood from the owners and had a cosy fire, I saw a pile of fire pits (washing machine drums) which I presume was for free use.

喜欢: Lovely view over the bay. Quiet, not crowded and level pitch. A lovely place fir a wslkalong the bay and a paddle on the water.

不喜欢: It was idyllic. Only water and a toilet dudposal point but we knew this before we booked

In the immediate vicinity, you could explore mysterious ancient history at Cairn Holy (five minutes' drive), a set of Neolithic chambered tombs. If you're minded to range far and wide you might also like a spin around the 7Stanes bike park in Dalbeattie (30 minutes). One of the closest castles is at Cardoness (five minutes) in a hilltop location where you can take in far-reaching views, while down by the coast Carsluith Castle (10 minutes) is very well preserved and free to enter. More history and heritage is showcased in Kirkcudbright (15 minutes; pronounced kirk-oo-bree), including Broughton House, a restored Georgian mansion. The town also has a swimming pool for those months when the sea's a bit too chilly for a dip. Newton Campsite is also within easy reach of pretty coastal peninsulas like Isle of Whithorn (40 minutes), a pretty coastal village long associated with St Ninian, who brought Christianity to Scotland. The Rhins of Galloway peninsula (45 minutes) is also well worth a visit if you fancy visiting green spaces like Logan Botanic Garden (an hour) or the southernmost point in Scotland, the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse (an hour and 10 minutes).
