A small and simple site with one very big USP, Brackenber Moor Caravan Site is bang in the middle of Appleby Golf Club, just off the A66. This moorland course was designed by Open Champion Willie Fernie in 1903, and it offers challenges for all levels of player – but please note that the site is not managed by the golf club, so you’ll need to book separately if you want to play a round. Taking a break at Brackenber is as close to wild camping as you can get in a caravan; the minimal on-site facilities include mains water and a chemical toilet disposal facility but no toilets or showers. But hey, chances are you’ll either be or out and about exploring the area or teeing off on that golf course. Dogs are welcome too, but due to the particular nature of the site, with flocks of free-roaming sheep around, they'll need to be kept on leads at all times. Sitting on the Eden river, Appleby-in-Westmorland is a great place to visit any time of year, with a medieval castle and Georgian-era architecture. A nose around will turn up plenty of pubs and restaurants if you fancy a change of scenery, or handy shops for picking up supplies if you’re going down the self-catering route.

喜欢 Stunning location. Peaceful. Its very much wild camping as theres no toilet or washing facilities. Golf club is local and dinner there is lovely. Beautiful sunsets. Perfect spot. Food at the golf club by the way is very affordable. We had 2 dinners and 2 desserts which came to £33.50. Bargain.

不喜欢 This is nothing to do with the owner of the land, but I and my partner did not find the people very friendly in the golf club. We're late 30s, early 40s however we are a mixed couple. I didn't feel comfortable there at all being the only mixed race person there. People weren't very friendly, instead just looking at us like we shouldn't be there. A shame because the food was lovely.

喜欢 A stunning location for a quiet stop over. Lots of free roaming sheep around and the most beautiful scenery. Not far from Appleby for supplies

喜欢 Location is fantastic. Quiet, glorious views.

不喜欢 No shade. On a hot day it would be difficult to cope with no shaded area.

喜欢 Really great location. Quiet and surrounded by beautiful views and far enough away from the A66 to avoid the noise. Great position if you want to play golf at Appleby which was great.

喜欢 We stopped here as an overnight stop on our way to Scotland. It was so close to the main road but a beautiful rural stop that was safe and restful.

喜欢 Such a peaceful stay. Choose your spot, set up camp and watch the sheep, birds and admire the views. Does not feel like a site, just a beautiful wild camp with the added bonus of a water tap, bin and elsan point.

Where to head first? With both the Lake District National Park (25 minutes’ drive) and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (15 minutes) so close, you’ll have plenty of options. Go west to Ullswater (40 minutes) for cruises on a steamer, or turn north to tour historic Killhope Lead Mining Museum (an hour) and drive the spectacular Hardside Pass (40 minutes). And if you’d rather discover Cumbria under your own steam, there are cycling routes and hiking trails across the region, with options including the challenging Pennine Way (half an hour) and the Coast to Coast Walk (20 minutes) and the Cumbria Cycle Way (50 minutes). For gentler pastimes combined with a dose of history, have a nose around the crumbling ruins of Lowther Castle and Gardens (half an hour), take a picnic to Penrith Castle (25 minutes) on a sunny day, or check out the landscaped gardens and working watermill at Acorn Bank (20 minutes).
