Mad about walking? Then you’d be silly to miss out on Aarons Campsite – the Cragg Vale location, between Halifax and Hebden Bridge, is right in the heart of the lush green Pennines, where heading out for a wander can turn into a full-blown hike that ranks up there with the best of them. The secluded family-friendly site, in an area of moors and fields, is within easy reach of local attractions such as the popular tourist town of Hebden Bridge. The surrounding hills and valleys (including Stoodley Pike) have been popular with trekking types for yonks too, whether for strolling along a riverside path, or for following stone causeways marking old packhorse routes. There's great dog-walking terrain in all directions too. It’s all about the relaxing back to basics camping experience here, but just have a chat with the staff and they’ll provide you with portable firepits and wood for your campfire (for a small extra charge) – they also have a larger fixed campfire available for group hire. The easily accessible fields are flat and drained. If you’re out of nosh or fancy leaving the cooking to someone else one evening, the site has a food shack and bar on site open on Fridays and Saturdays, where you can tuck into bacon butties and local brewed ales. But if you’re out in the car on a food mission, be sure to grab some bits for the barbecue and invite some of your newfound friends over for a evening meal.

喜欢: Good reasonably priced spot to stay while visiting friends in Hebden Bridge - 15 minutes drive away. We only stayed a night but rustic toilet/ sink facilities were clean and it was quiet (midweek). The owner also helpfully advised us on an easier slightly longer route to take up the hill in our campervan ...

不喜欢: The main field was taking over by vans and homes leaving any tents to go to the overflow field

喜欢: Quiet, incredibly helpful people when our campervan battery died. Relaxed. Fab welcome at open mic night, warm stove, bar and friendly folk.
Campsite description accurate so no worries about minimal toileting facilities.

We normally make sure that we have plenty of toilet facilities for our campers - we have both permanent toilets and portaloos. However, we had a large number of last minute unexpected bookings on the weekend in question and couldn't obtain extra portaloos in time! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay despite!

喜欢: Had a fantastic weekend, super helpful at the site, the bar was a lovely touch to the evening and the pizzas were gorgeous, we will be visiting again.

喜欢: From the owner to the guy that brings round the wood we were warmly welcomed. Open mic and band night on Fri was ace and the wee pub is brilliant, serves local vocation beer on draught too. Reasonably priced. Fire pit, kindling, firelighters and a huge bag wood is only 15 quid.

不喜欢: Toilets are very rustic and could do with tlc

喜欢: The location is brilliant with great facilities. A bar with live music on a weekend which I think needs to be made more clear as it seems very busy and full of party goers…. I will be willing to stay again but during the week. A lot of people didn’t sleep too well in the quiet field due to drunken lads. The the sun set was absolutely beautiful and staff are great. Great value for money but I just prefer not been woken up by people partying and not respecting other peoples peace. But like I say I’m definitely willing to try again during the week. X

不喜欢: The quiet field isn’t quiet or staffed for noise levels meaning a group of young lads (6 of them) kept a lot of people awake all night. Groups of 3 or more lads are not allowed as per the website rules for the campsite… don’t think I’ll return on a weekend if it’s a party site….. it should be made clear on the website that weekends are busy and people party.

Cragg Vale, a 10-minute drive away, is a top spot to delve into local history and is crammed with independent shops for souvenirs and wallet emptying, from antiques and secondhand books to handmade quality crafts. There's more shopping, along with Victorian streets and a hillside setting, at Hebden Bridge (20 minutes' drive), frequently hailed as one of the best market towns in the UK and Europe. Check out the town events when you're here too, as Hebden Bridge is home to an acclaimed arts festival and the famed Handmade Parade. Hikers can ramble around all sorts of walking havens from here, with the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland both within an hour's drive for weeks' worth of contented tramping about. Or have a highly energetic time closer to home with a clamber up to Stoodley Pike, commemorating the Battle of Waterloo. There are splendid views of green countryside from here, so bring your camera. Brontë buffs might also want to check out the ruined farmhouse Top Withens (45 minutes), said to have been the inspiration for the Earnshaw home in Wuthering Heights. The surrounding moors are sure to have you searching for the nearest bookshop, or perhaps bawling out a certain Kate Bush song from the 70s…
