There’s another fine garden to explore at Waddesdon Manor (40 minutes), with the added bonus of portraits by Gainsborough and Reynolds on display in the French-château-style main house. For sporting days out, book a round of golf (a couple of courses are within 10 minutes), and practise your parallel turns on the artificial slopes at Snozone. Prefer to watch someone (or something) else doing the hard work? Have a flutter on the greyhounds at Towcester Racecourse, or head to Silverstone Circuit (all 20 minutes) for the annual British Grand Prix in July and summer gigs by big-name bands. And if you’re more interested in fauna than fashion, then take a self-drive safari around Woburn Safari Park (half an hour) to see big cats, rhinos and wolves.
