Jara Farms, near Andover in the New York state, might be just the place – it's five miles from Vandermark State Forest, with Tall Pines ATV Park and a golf course 10 minutes’ drive away. Around here, you’ll practically have your pick of local state forests, where hiking, horse riding, hunting and snowmobiling are among the activities on offer.
This 80-acre rolling terrain – with 30 acres of woods and 50 acres of open fields and pastures – seems just made for wild camping. You’ll be truly wild here, as the site is tucked among the trees beside a trail leading from the meadows to the woodlands.
It’s so peaceful that all you’ll hear is the occasional cow mooing or someone calling the cows (there are lots of animals lounging in the meadows). And you might even get put to work if you really want to try out farm living at its most real.
The grassy pitches may be quiet, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be out of reach of the towns. Alfred, 10 minutes’ drive away, is the closest place to pick up your groceries and there are restaurants, cafés and the likes in there too – it’s a university town, so there’s a fair bit of action about it.

More on those state parks… while there are plenty of fishing ponds about this area, you're likely to have good luck with your fishing rod in Vandermark State Forest (15 minutes’ drive). This forest is packed with opportunities for other activities, such as snowshoeing, horse riding and birdwatching. It’s a similar story in Plumbottom State Forest (half an hour) too, where hunting and hiking are some of the go-to outdoor activities.
Biking’s a way to up the pace a little and a good place for that is Phillips Creek State Forest (10 minutes). As well as cross-country skiing and snowmobiling, this forest has both hiking and cycling trails, and many a place to stop and put your camera to work on the wildlife. Of course, for some more challenging trails – this time for ATVs and dirt bikes – Tall Pines ATV Park (10 minutes) is your guy.
Swimming’s simply splendid around the state too and it shows in Allegany State Park (an hour and five minutes), where there’s a sandy beach, two fishing piers and launches for canoes and kayaks. Another wild swimming spot is Wiscoy Falls (55 minutes), which feels properly wild with its challenging walking trail.
