It is (and you may just be one step ahead already here…) pretty much all about the watersports at Watersportcamping Heeg. If you’re into your aquatic antics, you’d be hard pushed to find a better location than this, between two lakes with heaps of space for sailing, canoeing, paddleboarding and windsurfing. Should you be rather more well supplied with enthusiasm than skills, friendly folk on site can give lessons and tips to help your technique. And should you fancy something a little less tiring? Settle on the lake beach for sunbathing, safe swimming (well away from those perfecting their paddle technique) and fishing in the shallows. Tempting as it may be, perhaps it’s best not to spend absolutely all your time in or on the water (you’d get all wrinkly, for starters). Take a wander around the site to suss out a comfy spot to dry off, or take a breather with a coffee and snack at the beach bar nattily converted from an old shipping container. A cluster of restaurants and cafés is in the little town of Heeg, a 10-minute walk away, along with a bakery and supermarket for those who’d like to source their own supplies… perhaps to cook on the barbie or over a campfire, both of which are permitted on site.

If you’re up for something truly local, site staff have a couple of activities up their sleeves unique to the Friesland area: call into reception for a chat and you could be heading out on an eel fishing trip on a retro barge or watching the hotly contested Frisian Fierljeppen competition in summer. And if you fancy trying this traditional canal vaulting technique for yourself, they can sort that out too. There’s some intriguing local heritage to explore too – the site is half an hour's drive from the Ir D F Woudagemaal, the UNESCO-listed largest steam pumping station in the world, and 40 minutes from the Eise Eisinga Planetarium, the oldest functioning planetarium in the world. Museum trips nearby include the arty Museum Belvédère half an hour away, and the sailing-themed Fries Scheepvaart Museum in Sneek, 20 minutes from the site. A little further away (around a 50-minute drive) is the kid-friendly AquaZoo Friesland, where you can see a whole host of water- and land-dwelling creatures including seals, kangaroos and flamingoes.
