If such questions elucidate an instant response along the lines of ‘take me there now’, flit off to Fenas Kite Spot as soon as you can, a place looking out across a national park made up of the Curonian lagoon, sandy dunes and open grassland.
According to the owners, this site in Klaipėda county is aimed at rebellious souls, whether groups of friends or couples, and the vibes follow suit – it’s a laidback sort of spot where evenings are spent chatting to fellow guests about the tricks you pulled that day and the wind conditions predicted for the next.
When thoughts turn to food, as they naturally will after all the energy you’ll have expended whizzing across the water, stoke up a barbecue using firewood available from the site and sizzle supplies from the shop in Dreverna (a five-minute drive). If you’d rather someone with more culinary expertise make your meals, leave the cooking to the care of one of the restaurants nearby.
If drinks are on the cards, a bar is at the edge of the site next to the toilets and showers, or you could also crack open a can and sip it outdoors while staring at the sunset by the lagoon.
If all this sounds stellar but you’re a kitesurfing or windsurfing newbie, make reservations well ahead of time for lessons from the park or check out one of the nearby watersports schools (there are at least five in the area). Your options aren’t limited to these two pursuits either – Dreverna is a hive of activity, with private boat trips, canoe excursions and bike rental to pick from.

Lokala sevärdheter
Dreverna (five minutes’ drive) is your closest tourist resort while staying at this serene spot. It has a harbour and a 15-metre-high observation tower that are both worth a look, as well as a range of restaurants. It’s also a hub for passenger ferries leading to Juodkrante, a quiet seaside settlement on the Curonian lagoon.
Private boat tours are available from Dreverna too, and kayaks are also for hire if you fancy using paddle power to wend your way across local waters.
For days on dry land, take your pick from forest adventures in Svencelė (15 minutes) to the east of the Curonian lagoon, renting a bike to easily explore a woodland wilderness, or venture south to the coast around Kintai (20 minutes) for sunbathing sessions.
