Throw your swimming kit in the suitcase, pack some comfy hiking clothes and get ready for national-park vistas of sun, sand, sea and summits – it’s all on the itinerary at Foggia's Camping Village Le Diomedee, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the coastal town of Vieste in the Apulia province.
Lazy, hazy, beachy days are a must round here: there’s direct access from the site onto the golden sands of Santa Maria di Merino Bay beach – stake a claim to a deckchair and umbrella, limber up for some beach volleyball and a swim, or take a stroll through the lapping water of the Adriatic Sea. Handily, the site restaurant overlooks the beach, so it’s just a quick step from sand to seafront pizzeria and snacks.
This spot is well suited for watersports too, so wander over to Bastysurf on the beachfront to sign up for windsurfing lessons, hire a board on site for some solo wave riding or get really adventurous with a sailing course on the high seas.
There’s a pool on site for sunbathing and swims without the sandy crevices (paddle over to the poolside bar for a cocktail or an ice cream), or stick to dry land with tennis, football, basketball and ping pong.
Le Diomedee's inside Gargano National Park, so land-based explores are a cinch hereabouts – the site runs half-day and full-day guided bikes and hikes through the park, stopping at farms, olive mills, local villages and historical sites… so set out on foot or hire a bike on site and get out adventuring.

This close to the Mediterranean coast (can you get any closer?), it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there’s plenty to do next to the sea. Start in Vieste for beach days, strolls through the scenic old town and along the promenade, and boat tours among the sea caves.
While in Vieste, climb aboard a ferry to the stunning Tremiti Islands, a 50-minute journey away in the Adriatic Sea – the island chain is a marine reserve and a top spot for diving, but there are caves, gorges and lush greenery too for activities above the waves.
Once you’re back on the mainland, wander away from the coast for hikes through the ancient Forestra Umbra, or for below-surface explores in the cave at the fifth-century Santuario dell’Arcangelo Michele religious complex.
If the kids are up for a car journey, treat them to a day of splashing around at AcquaFantasy waterpark an hour and a half away, or stay in the car for an extra hour to get them to the rides and stunt shows at Miragica theme park.
