Mountain views, alfresco activities, beach days, city culture and, naturally, a good pile of tasty local food and drink… bring on the whole lot with a stay at Antica Dimora Country House e Campeggio Fiordaliso, five minutes’ drive from the little medieval town of Sarnano. Settle at this small site in the grounds of a Marche country house to be greeted with views of the peaks of the Monti Sibillini National Park, a couple of kilometres away. That mountainous backdrop is excellent from most corners of the site, but perhaps best viewed either while keeping your cool in the outdoor swimming pool or prepping something tasty at the barbecue area… No doubt the views will entice you out for a closer look at some point – and that’s easily done, as it’s a simple five-minute drive to the national park for mountain bike outings, hikes from nearby Lago di Fiastra to Mount Vettore, or more intrepid days of hang gliding or paragliding. Set off in the opposite direction and it’s 40 minutes' drive to Macerata, or an hour to trundle as far as Ascoli Piceno or the Adriatic resorts of Pedaso and Porto San Giorgio. Closer to home, Sarnano has historical re-enactment in summer and is a top spot for sampling local produce and wine. Feel free to snap as many pics as you like while you’re out wandering; there’s a free wifi connection on site that you can use to share them with the lucky folk back home. Other facilities on site include a smart bathroom block, a laundry room and a shared indoor kitchen with barbecue area.

Lokala sevärdheter

Any stay here surely has to feature a good pile of rural activities – start with walks or mountain bike rides in the Monti Sibillini National Park (five minutes’ drive) or around Fiastra lake (20 minutes), or head out on horseback from Amandola (25 minutes). Touring foodies might also like to sign up for truffle hunting trips from San Ginesio (15 minutes), each of which ends with a fine feast of local fare. To throw a bit of Italian history into the mix, head to hilltop Macerata (40 minutes), where there’s lots of lovely old architecture to take in, including a splendid Gothic cathedral. Theatre buffs will want to stop by here in summer for evenings spent watching opera in the ancient amphitheatre. Drive south for an hour and you’ll land up in Ascoli Piceno, another fine city with art galleries and the grand Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo to explore. Plot a course in an easterly direction instead and that hour-long drive will get you to the Adriatic coast for beach days and seafood lunches in Pedaso.
