Peeps with a penchant for a glass or two of wine will find themselves among like-minded folks at Les Roulottes et les Folies de la Serve. Woodlands and vineyards surround this rural site five kilometres from Avenas, and the wineries of Fleurie, Beaujolais and the Saône Valley are within a half-hour drive.
For eats to accompany whatever bottles you select, pack up a picnic or ask the friendly folks on site to sort one for you. Or bring your wares back to base for a chilled evening on site, cooking up a feast on your barbie and sipping your vino of choice as the stars come out. On chillier days, or for more expansive prep, there’s a kitchen that you’re welcome to cook in.
Don’t fancy cooking? Again, a quiet word with your hosts can result in the rustling up of a plate of local cheeses and charcuterie to nibble on (for a small extra charge, of course). They’ll also get your day off to a cracking start by providing your petit dejeuner, served up in the 19th-century farmhouse’s breakfast room, or maybe on the terrace should the weather gods smile on you.
If you’ve admired the woodwork and the gorgeous gypsy caravans as you roamed around the farm, be sure to mention it to your hosts – much of it is homemade in their very own carpentry workshop. And if you really, really love the wooden caravans enough to crave your very own, it’s perhaps worth bearing in mind that these clever folks do take commissions…

Start your wine-based wanderings at Hameau Dubœuf, half an hour’s drive from the site. Tastings, educational tours, train rides and adventure golf are among the attractions at Europe’s first wine-inspired theme park.
Also around half an hour away is the Touroparc Zoo, for animal antics interspersed with amusement park fun and waterslide riding. Or you might choose the cool calm of the aquatic gardens at St-Didier-sur-Chalaronne, to wander through the bamboos and past lotus-filled ponds.
Closer to home, stride forth on hiking routes directly from the site or try your luck at the site’s fishing pond. Or take a quick five-minute drive to the local quad biking centre to hit the trails for some cracking views (bring some old clothes for this – things can get a tad messy).
