If you’re off on holiday in search of themed thrills, cool castles and sublime rural landscapes, you’ll be well-set once you pick a plot in the spacious grounds at this four-star site in Vendrennes.
Welcoming everyone, including families, dogs and disabled guests, this site sits at the crossroads of the A83 and the A87, 20 minutes’ drive from the theme park at Puy du Fou and an hour from the coast.
If you’re handy with a fishing rod, you might want to set your sights on the on-site private pond for fishing. Otherwise, test how many laps you can do in the site’s two heated pools, indoors or outdoors, with three waterslides to splash into the water (or sun loungers, if you prefer a snooze). Once you’ve dried off, refuel at the snack bar or head for more action in the multisports area and the outdoor playground with a trampoline, slides and swings.
When you’re ready to explore the local area, perhaps hire a bike from the site and pedal into the nearest town, Les Herbiers (15 minutes’ drive if you prefer driving), or stop by the local village for refreshments on the go. There are also several restaurants here (including a pizzeria) and a food shop.
At the end of the day, share your stories with loved ones using the wifi in the entertainment area or unwind with a gentle barbecue or chilled drink on the terrace. Handily, there’s also a launderette on site if your clothes are feeling a little mucky after all the action.

Rollercoaster your way into a world of history at the Puy du Fou theme park (20 minutes’ drive) and follow the ventures of pirates and explorers through rides around castle turrets. More pirate trails (and dinosaur rides too) are in store at Chateau Aventuriers (35 minutes).
Real-life fortresses are not too far away either – at Castle Tiffauges (half an hour), you can lord it over the French countryside or pretend you’re ready for arms standing over the medieval siege contraptions.
Towards the ocean, find a miniature world at Vendée Miniature (an hour). Perhaps learn how soap is made at Savonnerie des Collines (20 minutes) or embark on another educational journey at the history museum Le Refuge de Grasla (25 minutes)
For something with a generous splash of colour, Parc Oriental de Maulévrier (45 minutes) makes for a peaceful oriental garden stroll.
