On a peaceful farm by the Aure river, surrounded by the lush agricultural landscape of Calvados, Aire de la Ferme Froide is a pretty sweet spot to explore this historic area of northern France. Remote it might feel, but the site is less than 10 kilometres from Bayeux (easily accessed via the nearby D67) and about a half-hour drive from the coast. And what a coast this is. The wide beaches are excellent for building sandcastles and running around in an attempt to fly kites (cue – one would hope – happy children); however, in 1944 these sandy stretches were also the theatre for the Allied invasion of Normandy, which means that there’s a lot to pique the interest of grown-ups (or of anyone who’s into World War II history). This includes museums like the Memorial Museum of Omaha Beach (25 minutes) and memorials like the British Normandy Memorial (half an hour), as well as the beaches themselves – from Omaha to Utah (half an hour’s drive and 50 minutes, respectively). Back at the site, a game of pétanque or communing with the farm animals (gentle cows and inquisitive goats, among others) ought to help raise your spirits after a day visiting sombre historical landmarks. Dogs are welcome, as long as they are well behaved and kept on a lead around the livestock. Owners Mickael and Stéphanie are on hand to suggest alternative activities (hot-air balloon flight, anyone?) and sights, from the early 13th-century Mondaye Abbey (five minutes, or a 20-minute walk) to amusement parks like Bayeux AVENTURE (15 minutes).

Tyckte om: Good road access form main routs and close to Bayeux. Very quiet as it is a rural location. Warm welcome on arrival. flat pitches and plenty of room.

Tyckte inte om: The bushes separating the pitches are new and rather low but being new will soon grow, ans not a real problem.

Tyckte om: Owner was very friendly and we bought some excellent eggs from her .
Grass pitches with electric .
It had a good hot shower
We would stay again for one night as good location to Bayeux 10 mins drive away
Reasonable pitch price .

Tyckte inte om: The washing facilities look very tired and probably could do with a make over

Tyckte om: A true gem of a site. Comparable to a CL or CS back in the UK. Well kept and tidy. 6amp electric included in the price. No fancy frills but can see where improvements are ongoing.
Really handy for Normandy beaches and Bayeux. Easy to find and access is good.
The owner really cannot do enough for you. She is friendly and welcoming, sells eggs from the chickens you can watch from your van as well as Cidre she makes herself.
This isn't one of those fancy sites with all singing, all dancing facilities. It is basic, honest and down to earth.

Tyckte om: Only 2.5 hours from the Dieppe ferry port. Perfect first stop for our 90 day tour. We arrived just as it was getting dark as we got off the ferry at 4.30pm. Arrived around 7.30pm as we were driving slower with a trailor. It was almost dark on arrival so was unsure where to pitch up however there is a large gravel entrance so we just parked there for the night until we could see clearer in the morning. This was no issue to other campers as we were not in the way. We then set up our camp in the morning. Booked 3 nights initially and then stayed an additional 2 nights as there was lots to see and visit in the surrounding areas.

Loved the peaceful rural setting yet only a 10/15 minute drive to the City of Beyeaux.

Loved the chickens and goat, very cool to watch them.

Although we didn't have children with us there are outdoors games available for them to borrow (Table tennis, footballs etc and a swing!)

Local cider and eggs available to purchase!!

Toilet and shower were basic but thats all we needed. The whole site is clean and tidy. We will absolutely return again on our return journey!

The owner Stephanie is a gem, a very lovely lady!

Tyckte om: Lovely little site in the countryside. Only 10 minutes drive into Bayeux. Stephanie was very helpful and we even bought some freshly laid eggs. Will definitely go again. Pitches are all flat and grass but let us park on the gravel as it had been very wet weather.

The Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux, in Bayeux, displays the famed tapestry that narrates the story of William the Conqueror’s invasion of England in 1066, while the Museum of the Battle of Normandy, on the outskirts of town, recounts a different invasion: the events of D-Day. Caen (half an hour’s drive) spreads around a castle first built by William the Conqueror (or Guillaume le Conquérant, as he is known around these parts). The hilltop citadel also includes the Musée de Normandie, illustrating the history of the region, and a Museum of Fine Arts housing paintings by the Old Masters. In Colleville-sur-Mer (half an hour), the Overlord Museum is one of several local museums exploring the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy, with tanks and military vehicles, medals and uniforms, and re-enactments.
