Just French fab... for setting, for facilities and for vibe. Fontaine du Roc in the sunny Lot-et-Garonne is a family site in scenic countryside on a hillside of oak woodland, in the Purple Périgord south of the Dordogne. It's among the Pays des Bastides too and 10 minutes' drive from Villereal too if you'd like to instruct your juniors in a little French history... and has plenty of kid-friendly stuff on site if your offspring baulk at the very thought. There's a good-sized paddling pool with waterslide among the kids' facilities here, along with a well-equipped playground and a trampoline for more energetic times. Kids – and grownups – can also tackle a game of table football or table tennis on the bar terrace, get to grips with national game pétanque, or, possibly when a tad tired, burrow into the library corner for reading, TV and wifi. Around for the adults is a big outdoor pool (with a somewhat bigger waterslide), along with a Jacuzzi to bubble in. Entertainment and activities for all ages, including drawing and painting classes, runs in high season. The Fontaine du Roc bar sells snacks to have on its handsome terrace, and you can also bag groceries and fresh bread at the site shop for light meals or to prep up on the communal barbecues. Should you say a holiday Pah to all that, trot along to the site restaurant for family dins of regional and Périgord cuisine, keeping an eye out for the regular foodie events such as communal dinners and barbecue or pizza nights.

Lokala sevärdheter

Much of the surrounding limestone forest is crisscrosed with hiking and cycling paths, or you can canter among the trees on horseback; ask the Fontaine du Roc for details of local riding schools. Fishing is available 500 metres away. This is bastide country, with several such towns within easy reach: Villereal is 10 minutes' drive away, Monpazierand Monflanquin 15, and Issigeac 20. For castles, the mighty Château de Biron is within 10 minutes (you can see it from the site), and you could/ should also have a potter around the old piles at Bonaguil (30 minutes) and Beynac and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, each 50 minutes away. The famed city of Bergerac is 40 minutes' drive from the site.
