Staying in a former mining village might have already piqued your interest in Scotland’s mining history. Handily enough, you won’t be left wondering for too long, with the National Mining Museum Scotland (five minutes’ drive) so close by. It’s an interactive experience too, with tour guides in the form of ex-miners to take you down underground. Sometimes you just want a little of the sea too – and if so, you could bike from the city of Edinburgh to Portobello Beach (25 minutes) or take refuge in the little mining seaside town of Prestonpans (25 minutes). If you’re after something a little challenging muscle-wise, the Pentland Hills Regional Park (20 minutes) is right on hand with 100 kilometres of hiking and cycling trails in the hills over Edinburgh.
