Get set for some proper Cheshire chillout time – stays in the cosy shepherd’s hut at Golborne Caravan Park are all about relaxing and soaking up the fresh air and lovely views. This well-appointed hut is part of a small caravan site in a handy location a little way off the A41 about five miles south of Chester (making this a handy location for getting out and about for day trips). At the heart of the site is a fishing pond that attracts lots of wildlife (as well as being free for guests to use) and makes a particularly good view at sunrise or sunset, both of which are often quite colourful around here. As it’s a dark-sky area you’ll often get some spectacular stargazing by night too. Mother-and-daughter management team Karen and Natalie have made every effort to make sure the hut has everything you’ll need for a comfortable break. The double bed is made up ready for arrival, and there’s a TV and digital radio as well as a kitchenette with microwave, fridge, kettle and nifty Ninja Foodi 8-in-1 oven. Charging points, fans, plug-in heaters and a fold-down table are also provided, and the hut has an ensuite toilet and sink (with a shared toilet/shower block close by). The highlight, however, may well be the deck and outdoor space, which looks out over the lake and has Adirondack chairs and a firepit (with two bags of logs provided and more available to buy). For snacks and drinks to complete the picture, head to the site’s café/farm shop, which is open 9am-4pm Tuesday to Sunday with a tempting range of pies, pasties and cakes (eat in or take away) as well as essentials like milk and bread.

Tyckte om The site the Shepard Hut is located on is absolutely breathtaking the scenic views are stunning I absolutely loved how secluded the space around us was it was the perfect little break away from the business of living in the city.The hut alone was extremely clean and tidy and well equipped, and so cozy. I had the best sleep, and loved waking up in the morning walking over to the lake and just being able to sit in peace. The staff on site are so lovely and approachable, I really appreciated the fire wood the site manager Karen provided, she made us feel so welcome. I cannot fault the experience one bit.

Tyckte om My son and I had a lovely stay in the shepherd's hut, plenty of small fish to be had on the lake. Used as a base to visit various other fisheries in the area,very clean well kept site, will certainty visit again.

Tyckte om Absolutely everything! Stayed in the hut, it had everything you could ever need for a two night stay. Very peaceful area, no one else around at all. Fished the lake and caught loads! Literally cannot fault it. Was booked on behalf of my parents for their 40th Wedding Anniversary, they said "they couldn't have asked for a better present"

Tyckte om Wonderful compact hut, set near large pond, geese for company and tranquil surroundings, almost everything you need for a few days relaxation. Hut is neat, tidy,clean and 6-7 miles from Chester centre, taxis available ( Uber) £12-£15 one way. Hosts made sure we were welcome and left us alone, but we’re available if needed. Would definitely recommend.

If you’re in the mood for just some very light activity, you can take short walks on the farm, wandering through the woods and rewilding area (and perhaps taking a nice break at the picnic tables and hammocks). There’s also an antique/crafts centre next door that has 15 dealers and a constant influx of new stock to browse. For longer wanders, you can head into the Peckforton Hills (10 minutes’ drive) to stroll on the Sandstone Trail, or explore Beeston Castle (15 minutes). Either way, you’ll certainly have earned a treat from The Ice Cream Farm (five minutes) on the way home… Chester (10 minutes’ drive) is full of things to do, as well, whether you’d like to do a circuit of the city walls, explore the black-and-white buildings, visit the cathedral and Roman amphitheatre or spend the day at the zoo. The outlet shops at Cheshire Oaks might just be tempting, too…
