Even getting there for a weekend getaway is a cinch, as it’s just off the old Naboomspruit Tarred Road (R101), 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Modimolle (previously known as Nylstroom) in Limpopo province.
And when you do arrive, all is calm and peaceful, thanks to the pristine bushveld setting. Chances are the only sound that will disturb you is the song of an abundant birdlife.
Why so handy for families? Well, no-one will ever go short of family-centric stuff to do at Modimolle, with its swimming pools (one heated, one not), volleyball court, outdoor chess, table tennis… and for youngsters, there’s a playground with trampoline and slip-and-slide mats.
Come the holiday season, a dedicated team puts on entertainment for the kids, freeing up the grownups to do their own thing. Perhaps that will be leisurely family catch-up days on spacious pitches sheltered by trees, heading out into the bush for a game drive or getting together with fellow guests at the communal barbecue near the thatched shelter for an alfresco cook-up – the choice is yours.
Amenities in the park make it easy to keep on top of family housekeeping, with washing machines, tumble dryers and irons to take care of the laundry. Pitches all have an electric hook-up and water points close by, making cooking for the family a doddle.

Atrações locais
Along with the gorgeous bushveld landscape, the biggest attraction in these parts are the game reserves. Hire a four-wheel drive for safaris in Combretum Park (half an hour’s drive) to spot giraffes and antelope, or Marakele National Park (an hour and a half), where you’re likely to see leopards and elephants on morning or sunset bush walks.
For close encounters of the toothy kind with reptiles, head for Thaba Kwena Crocodile Farm (half an hour) to witness quite a spectacle at feeding time. Equally adrenaline-inducing is the chance to zoom over the tree canopy at Waterberg Zipline Adventures (25 minutes) on a series of high-velocity zipwires.
If you’d rather slow the pace, go walking the Waterberg Mountains (an hour) for waterfall and grassland views, or follow hiking trails through Nylsvlei Nature Reserve (25 minutes) to catch sight of green pigeons and black eagles. Still looking for ideas? Fish for carp at Donkerpoort Dam (20 minutes) or play a round or two golf at Naboomspruit (25 minutes).
