If you're torn between the idea of a convenient town setting and a relaxed rural spot for your family camping trip, allow yourselves the luxury of having both with a stay at Camping Batenstein, in the West Netherlands. Pitches here are spacious and surrounded by lovely greenery and flowers, with the landscapes of the Groene Hart polders as a backdrop. The peaceful atmosphere is boosted further by views of the large lake, which takes up almost half of the six-acre site. With a setting like this, it's no surprise to hear that walking, cycling and fishing are popular pastimes here – for the last of these you can try your luck hooking carp and pike from the site's lake if you've got the right permit. If the kids need a bit more entertainment, you can let them run about at the site's playground or take them next door to the public swimming pool. And if all this sounds lovely and rural… well, you'd be mistaken, because in fact this Utrecht-region site is in the Bredius Park area of the town of Woerden. That means that whenever you fancy it you can head into the centre of of town (about 15 minutes' walk/five minutes' cycle) to find shops and places to eat, or board a train to more far-flung destinations (Utrecht, Rotterdam, Gouda and ’s-Hertogenbosch are among the options).

Atrações locais

A wander around Woerden should be your first outing, of course – it’s a lovely town with lots of traditional buildings, including the Petruskerk, the City Museum and the Windhond windmill. You can also visit the Cheese Warehouse experience, see the historic cheese market on Saturday mornings or walk along the canal path to see all the classic boats bobbing in the water. A little way out of town (half an hour's walk/10 minutes' cycle), Boerderij de Boerinn is the place to try all sorts of activities like paddleboarding, canoeing, clog golf and goat yoga (yes, goat yoga…) as well as being good place for indoor games on damp days. There are lots of lovely (and easy) walks and bike rides in the surrounding polders too. Looking further afield, you may like to visit the famed cheese town of Gouda, tour the canals in Utrecht (both half an hour by car or train) or see the cathedral and Jheronimus Bosch Art Center in ’s-Hertogenbosch (an hour by car or train).

Gostou: Small site a short distance away from a nice town. Reasonable sized pitches with very clean facilities. No cars allowed on site and they have to park outside. Excellent wifi.

Não gostou: We found it slightly unusual that to access the site in or out by camper van , you had to locate the warden. All hot water for showers and washing up was an additional cost but overall cost very reasonable so can’t complain.

Gostou: Schöner gemütlicher Campingplatz im traumhaft Örtchen Woerden. Man ist schnell in Utrecht und Rotterdam. Ein kostenfreier Parkplatz befindet sich nahe des Campingplatzes. Die sanitären Anlagen waren immer sehr sauber.

Gostou: We really enjoyed Camping Batenstein, the pitch was a great size and there was plenty of room between pitches so you didn't feel crowded.

The facilities were really clean and the showers were amazing. Yes, you paid for a token but it was worth it for a decent shower where you didn't need to keep pressing a button.

Didn't use the Wifi but it was a great 5g signal on the phone.

We left our motorhome here and walked to the train station - an easy 15 min walk at most - and caught the train to Zaanse Schans, Amsterdam and Gouda. So much easier than worrying about parking etc. Trains were really frequent and nice and cool.

Gostou: We stayed as a family with two children aged 7 and 10. It was very child friendly, they were able to easily find their way around the facilities and enjoyed watching the birds and ducks in the streams on the site. The water play park next door was fantastic! Free entry and a bar with nice coffee and snacks.

The campsite facilities were clean and easy to use and access. Water 20 cents and shower 90 cents so make sure to take coins with you.

Reception staff were helpful and friendly. The location was great with a short 10 minute walk to the train station or into the town. We visited Leiden and Amsterdam and had a great time in Woerden too.
