What a lot there is to do at the Drenthe glampsite of Vodatent at Recreatiepark De Tien Heugten… and those who don’t like to pack loads of kit to take on hols will be chuffed to note that the accommodation here is in smart and well-equipped safari tents too.
A family-friendly park 15 minutes’ walk from Schoonloo, Recreatiepark De Tien Heugten is home to a swish swimming lake with a roomy sandy beach area for sunbathing. If you manage to unpeel yourself from there, hail the land train that tours the park so you can decide what to do next… a whizz down the waterslide at the outdoor pool, perhaps, while the kids make a splash in the paddling pool…?
Away from the water there’s a smart 18-hole miniature golf course an a sports field for all ages to get competitve at, as well as playgrounds and programme of kids’ club activities in summer.
Eats (including those essential ice creams) can be picked up at the Grand Café or at the shop, which is stocked with fresh bread and other essentials. If you pick the latter option, you’ll be chuffed to see that your safari tent is kitted out with a mobile kitchen, so you can cook under cover or wheel it out into the open air on a fine day.
Among the other amenities on site are bike hire, wifi (at the restaurant) and a launderette with washing machines, tumble dryers and ironing facilities.

Atrações locais
History, horse rides and a theme park are among the attractions closest to your safari tent base: the ancient standing stones of Hunebedcentrum Borger, cantering from Manege Gasselte, and the Drouwenerzand Attractiepark amusement park are all 10 minutes’ drive away.
A top option for small sorts is the Kabouterland gnome park (15 minutes), a fably bonkers place of leprechauns, play areas and all sorts of scope for daft capering – as the staff say, there’s gnome place like it… All tastes should like a day at the famed Wildlands adventure theme park (20 minutes), where there are over 80 species of animals as well as four huge adventure zones including the largest zoo jungle hall in the world … but sadly, no gnomes.
Bike fans should surely roar along to the Assen TT Circuit (20 minutes), host of the Dutch TT and reverently referred to as the cathedral of motorcycling by those in the know.
