There are some folks who would (wisely) suggest that there are no finer days than those spent by the sea. Those folks are likely to be very pleased with their lot during a stay at Camping La Giroflée, a peaceful Poitou-Charentes coastal site five minutes’ drive from Bourcefranc-le-Chapus.
This is a super spot for seaside antics – there’s a sandy beach just across the road from the site and a sailing school next door where you can get stuck in to all sorts of watersports. Sea-view cycle rides are all around too, either on the Vélodysée bike path (which stretches for a muscle-busting 1200 kilometres along the country’s Atlantic coastline) or over on the island of Oléron, which faces the site and can be reached with around 20 minutes of pedalling. Those whose packing situation didn’t allow them to bring bikes can hire them on site.
For eats, it’s a five-minute drive (or 10-minute bike outing) to the shops in Bourcefranc-le-Chapus, although you can order bread deliveries on site in the summer months, and local farmers drop by with fresh fruit and veg a few times a week. There’s a restaurant next door and barbecues are permitted on site, but if you’re after a special dinner à deux, it’s perhaps worth seeking out nearby oyster sellers and trotting back to the beach for supper as the sun sets.
Should you briefly tire of the beach (pffft), there’s a playground and pétanque court on site for a bit of alternative entertainment.

Atrações locais
If life on the ocean wave appeals, make tracks to the sailing school a couple of minutes’ stroll away to learn the ropes for yourself, or devolve captaining responsibilities to the pros by boarding a boat trip from Bourcefranc-le-Chapus, five minutes’ drive away.
More sea-themed days out might include meandering around the oyster farms in Marennes Plage (five minutes’ drive), a trip to the maritime museum in Rochefort (half an hour) and eyeballing underwater beasties at La Rochelle’s famed aquarium (50 minutes).
Sticking firmly to dry land for a while, swing by the splendid citadel of Brouage (15 minutes), where the fortified city walls guard all sorts of well-preserved 17th-century structures including a prison and an underground port. The Zoo de la Palmyre (half an hour) makes a fab day out for the small sorts, and there are lots of excellent walking and bike trails taking in beaches, forest and salt marshes on the island of Oléron (20 minutes’ bike ride over the bridge).
