Self-catering with a touch of luxury and spectacular Denbighshire views sound pretty good to you? Make indecent haste to Sunbank Accommodation, where stylishly furnished yurts (and those glorious forested hill vistas, of course) await your North Wales escape. The lively tourist town of Llangollen (five minutes’ drive) has pretty much everything you need – from shops to restaurants and many attractions – yet when you retire to your yurt, all you’ll hear is birdsong. Inside each spacious yurt there’s a compact dining area, storage and a cosy double bed (all linens supplied, but please bring your own towels). You can stay cosy no matter what time of year you visit, as each features a woodburning stove – just remember to bring your own logs, coal or kindling, as well as firelighters, or buy them all last-minute at the local shops. If it’s been a long day of sightseeing, you can snuggle up and watch TV, or retire to bed and read thanks to bedside lamps lighting the accommodation. Outside there’s sensor lighting, a private garden with a charcoal barbecue and decked seating area, plus a few simple cooking facilities (camping stove, small fridge, microwave, pots, pans and utensils) in an alfresco kitchen. Stylish modern bathrooms are available for exclusive use just steps away from the yurts. There is also private parking at the yurts.

Thistlebank yurt

Gostou: What's not to like! The yurt was quirky and cute as well as cosy and welcoming. The kitchen area and bathroom were clean and well equipped. The owners greeted me and then made sure I had all I needed. The scenery was amazing - even in the rain and the walks were fabulous. Added bonus of the nearby pub if needing food or shelter.

Não gostou: Nothing. The site is accessible and as expected. If I was being really picky I would say the distant road noise is the only pitfall.

Sunbank yurt

Gostou: Lovely location and views, very relaxing if you don’t mind the distant traffic noise. Great walks close by and only a couple of minutes drive into Llangollen.

Não gostou: Very cold in January and we were not provided with enough fuel for the logburner which stated was included in the price of booking. (Felt awkward having to ask for more).

Music lovers, if you hit Sunbank Accommodation in early July, you’ll catch Llangollen’s world-famous International Musical Eisteddfod (five minutes’ drive), but whenever you visit there’s plenty to do. Take scenic walks along the River Dee, check out the soaring arches of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct or climb aboard the Llangollen and Corwen Railway (both also five minutes) for a steam ride through lush Denbighshire countryside. If your interest lies in history, hike up to the landmark remains of 13th-century Castell Dinas Brân (35 minutes’ walk), with its fabulous views over Welsh valleys. Alternatively you can explore the photogenic remains of Cistercian Valle Crucis Abbey, or check out the storied Plas Newydd Historic House and Gardens (both 10 minutes’ drive), a half-timbered Tudor-era mansion with eclectic additions from Victorian times. Travelling with family? Spend the day getting to know rhinos, chimps and lions at Chester Zoo (35 minutes), let the kids run off some excess energy on the treetop ropes at BeWILDerwood Cheshire (40 minutes), or try rafting at the National White Water Centre (45 minutes) in Eryri National Park.
