As you wend your way along the coast of west Wales, make time to stop for a breather at this secluded rural spot. Wild Meadow Camping is a peaceful Ceredigion site at the end of a quiet country lane just under a mile from Plwmp, with pitches spread around a meadow that's been planted up with native plants and trees to create a proper wildlife haven. This is the sort of place where you can watch red kites soar through the skies, see swallows swoop over the field and spot dragonflies hovering in the undergrowth. Foxes, badgers and rabbits are regular visitors too, and there's a little stream running through the site to top it all off. The facilities are more than adequate on this small-scale site – you'll have access to two shower rooms, two separate toilets and a washing-up area, all of which are kept clean and are well-maintained. Barbecues can be had but must be lifted clear of the grass (it's best to have a chat about this with someone on site before you get cooking). This area is popular with walkers, who often head for the Wales Coast Path (about 10 minutes' drive away). The pretty Teifi river also runs through nearby small towns like Llandysul and Newcastle Emlyn (both 15 minutes) if you fancy exploring the hinterland.

Gostou: A well laid-out site in a beautiful location, with clean and well maintained facilities with friendly and welcoming owners, Andy and Lisa.

Não gostou: Although the dish-washing facilities were very clean and the water was hot, the sink is very deep and means you're leaning over whilst washing dishes, which wasn't great for my 66 year-old back, but that's a minor issue.

The Fisherman’s cabine

Gostou: We have stayed here several times over the past few years in both the Shepherds hut and the Fisherman's Cabin. Both are really lovely and comfortable for a family and cleanliness is exceptional. The campsite is very special and is our go-to campsite for a quick break with access to fantastic beaches and coves in West Wales. Andy is a superb owner and is available and friendly without being intrusive and nothing is too much trouble.

Gostou: Andy & Lisa are very welcoming and approachable. The campsite is a lovely setting with all pitches overlooking the wild meadow in the centre. Andy was telling us the as the meadow grows you can see owls hovering above. The shower and toilet block are 10/10, very well done, lovely and clean and warm too! Some of the best facilities we have seen. We will definitely return if in the area.

Gostou: We had an incredible experience at Wild Meadow Camp! From the very beginning, communication with Andy was top-notch. He explained every single detail, ensuring we were well-prepared for our stay.

The camp itself is set around a beautiful meadow, providing a peaceful and scenic backdrop. While one of our friends stayed in the cosy, well-equipped shepherd’s cabin, we set up a tent nearby. Both options were comfortable and added to the unique charm of the campsite.

At night, the starry sky was absolutely breathtaking, perfect for stargazing in the quiet, serene surroundings. Andy was incredibly helpful, offering excellent tips on the best spots to explore and where to eat nearby.

The toilet and shower facilities were clean and well-maintained, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Overall, we loved our stay at Wild Meadow Camp, and the owner’s attention to detail made it truly special. Highly recommended!

Gostou: Being greeted at the gate to the campsite by its owner, Andy, complete with a big smile, was a unique and very special experience!

We loved the wild flowers, clear night skies and the peace.

The facilities block was very clean and modern with hot water.

It felt like a proper, traditional campsite.

Não gostou: There's really nothing to dislike. I guess we'd have preferred a shower without the £1 coin charging.

Gostou: This site was just brilliant. I booked it knowing I wanted a small site that was peaceful but with plenty of places for my kids to run around safely. The other people staying were very respectful and quiet. I also enjoyed the no music rule (despite being a family of musicians) and the lack of WiFi and fairly patchy signal. The pitches were massive so we didn't feel on top of other tents. The five minute shower was more than enough for me and my 2 kids to have a shower together. Andy was really helpful and chatty, giving us ideas for dinner and beaches. The stars were beautiful (I saw my first ever shooting star) and we saw kites and heard owls.

The Fisherman’s cabine

Gostou: Wild meadows is Beautiful little campsite, spotlessly clean facilities. The host was friendly and welcoming we loved it here so much we booked to come back the following week and without a doubt will be back again!

For a chance to sail the ocean blue, make for New Quay (15 minutes' drive), where offshore angling trips can be booked at the harbour. Fisherfolk aren't the only ones who come here in search of mackerel – families of bottlenose dolphins can often be seen carving up the waves across Cardigan Bay. Back on land, New Quay Honey Farm (15 minutes) is worth dropping by if you've got a sweet tooth (curious kids can watch the bees busily making the wares behind a glass screen). This being Wales, there are also several top-tier fortifications around, including the rugged ruins of Newcastle Emlyn Castle (15 minutes) and Cilgerran Castle (30 minutes) with its chunky towers. Cardigan Castle (30 minutes) is well worth visiting too; there's also an eight-mile circular walk connecting Cilgerran to Cardigan if you fancy ticking off both. Those with an interest in fab Welsh fabrics, meanwhile, might want to pay a visit to the National Wool Museum (20 minutes), a nicely informative attraction that walks you through the machines, textiles and history with an array of hands-on displays. Sleeping bag not as warm as you thought? Pick up a cosy souvenir in the museum shop.
