Skiing sorts and summertime strollers in search of a stay away from the major resorts would do well to consider a stay at the Ski Caravan Club in Monte Terminillo. You’ll probably have already divined from the site’s name that it’s a mountainside site – more precisely, it’s in the Apennine range half an hour’s drive from the city of Rieti and and hour and a half from Rome. You’ll no doubt have also picked up that this site makes a great stay for those seeking activities out on the cold white stuff. The resort’s name may be somewhat unfamiliar to many but it’s rated by natives as one of the best equipped resorts in this part of the country, with pistes and parks aplenty to accommodate downhill skiers, snowboarders and cross country types alike. It’s not just a winter wonderland, though – summertime is an equally splendid season to stop here for days spent taking the mountain-fresh air as you hike, bike or ride around the area. After days spent taking in the great outdoors, trot back to the site for some chill time in the library or TV room or over a well-earned libation in the bar. The convenience store should be able to supply all you need for a cracking cookout, or you can put your feeding needs in the expert hands of the restaurant staff, who serve up top-notch, top-value menus in a cosy setting. On warmer days, venture out onto the open-air terrace for alfresco drinks and dining; it’s handily located next to the playground so you can keep an eye on the tiddlers while they entertain themselves. Other useful bits and bobs on site include wifi access (small charge), a washing-up area and a clean modern toilet block where hot showers await weary walkers or skiers at the end of a long day.

Summer visitors can stride forth on one of the hiking trails that run through the mountains, or take to the tracks on two wheels (mountain bikes are, perhaps unsurprisingly, favoured around here). Depending on how well behaved you’ve been, perhaps take your pick from walks in nearby Hell’s Valley or Angels’ Valley. If four legs seems better than two, there’s a riding centre 40 minutes away that can help organise horseback outings through the meadows or mountains depending on your level of experience. Other summertime fun includes swinging clubs around at one of the area’s two golf courses (both about half an hour’s drive away) and swinging through the trees at Squirrels Park, an adventure park with ziplines and woodland assault course a five-minute drive from the site. In snow season, Monte Terminillo has six marked cross country routes and three ski lifts leading to more than 40 kilometres of prepared pistes. There are also a couple of snow parks for snowboarders and several ski schools to send you on your way. For a little slice of city life, head to Rieti, half an hour away, to wander through the historic streets and visit the cathedral and bishop’s palace. Later on, take an underground tour to discover the cool caverns and tunnels that lie beneath the busy streets.
