Get the walking boots on to explore local woodland and have a mooch through pretty villages along the Downs Link route (15 minutes’ walk). For long-distance hikes, head for trails on the high chalk escarpment in the South Downs National Park (25 minutes’ drive), while water-sports fans can head for Southwater Country Park (five minutes) for canoeing and sailing on the lake. Family days out might include a visit to the lemurs and flamingoes at Drusillas Park (45 minutes), or time spent on the sands at Worthing (half an hour), where kids can also have a go on the beachside Ferris wheel. Take a tootle through West Sussex countryside aboard the Bluebell Railway (45 minutes), or treat the offspring to an encounter with wallabies at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens (15 minutes). Have a day out to boho Brighton (40 minutes) to meander down the pier for sea views or play the amusement arcades, before doing a bit of window-shopping for jewellery and art on The Lanes. If culture is more to your interest, tour the ornate Royal Pavilion or head to Arundel (half an hour) to explore the cathedral and castle, or check out Winston Churchill’s former wartime HQ at Chartwell (50 minutes).
