Fancy a slice of rural Italian life, pottering around little medieval villages, soaking in thermal waters, touring wineries or basking on the beaches? How about following that up with evenings sampling local produce as the sun goes down over your gorgeously green surrounds?
If the answer is a resounding si, say ciao bella as you meet Agricampeggio Tognoni, part of a family-run fruit and veg farm in the Maremma region. Life is peachy indeed in this spot, surrounded by peach trees and open fields between the spa town of Venturina Terme and the sandy beach of Baratti (and only a 10-minute drive from both).
The vibe here is decidedly chilled, with a focus on just being out and about in natural surroundings. There’s a volleyball pitch if you fancy gathering folks for a game, and space for the bambini to run about and let off steam. Other mod cons include wifi access, toilets (one accessible for less mobile guests), indoor hot showers and an outdoor shower with cold water for hot days or hardy types.
You’ll have to do your own catering here, but that’s more of a bonus than a hardship when you’ve got access to a fab outdoor (covered) kitchen area with barbecues and tables, and can create your meals with fruit and veg fresh from the farm’s own fields.
Subsidise your farm shop haul with extras from the farmers’ co-op or supermarket in Venturina Terme and all that remains is to pick up a bottle or two of the local vino (direct from the producers perhaps) and raise a glass to the good life as dusk falls over your little rural retreat...

The Maremma region’s a fab place for those who like to go a-wandering – get your walking shoes on and off you go through woods and marshes, up and down hills and past striking black rocky cliffs. And of course there are coastal trails to follow too, with the promise of a cooling dip in the sea at the end.
An equally excellent way to pass a day is to skip the walk and head straight to the beach on the Gulf of Baratti, for a splendid swathe of sand home to a sailing centre and windsurf rental shops. Piombino (20 minutes in the car) is the spot for a scuba diving trip or a boat to the island of Elba.
Further relaxing times can be had in the thermal waters of Venturina Terme, 10 minutes’ drive away, or you could aim for the opposite of a relaxing time and take yourselves (and excitable kids) off to the Cavallino Matto theme park, 20 minutes away in Donoratico.
A good handful of wineries are within a half-hour drive, to acquire a bottle or two to accompany your evening eats back at base.
