Ah, the splendid Somme. The river running for a whopping 245 kilometres through French countryside to the spectacular Bay of the Somme in the English Channel has long been a popular pick for fishing, canoeing and rafting. Or there's cycling alongside its lush banks, or moseying along on a sightseeing trip to stop off at Somme-based towns like Somme department capital Amiens and its UNESCO-listed cathedral that's the biggest in France...
Access the lot with ease from Picardy's Camping de l'Abîme, where the river runs through the local village of Picquigny. You won't have to jingle car keys once during your stay here if you're not feeling driven to, as the site is a mere few minutes' walk from the village; book canoe and rafting trips at the nearby nautical base to explore the river in style. There's also a train station if you'd like to travel by public transport, around 10 minutes' walk away.
Somme fishing is available directly from the site, and nearby in the many surrounding ponds and lakes. Or, if you're feeling fully energetic, bring your bikes on hol so you can tackle the cycle path next to the river that's part of the V30 route: 120 kilometres of riverside path are here to explore, so you might care to bring a comfy pad for your saddle too.
The spectacular city of Amiens is about 13 kilometres from Camping de l'Abîme: you can cycle here too along the mostly flat D135, or hail a bus near de l'Abîme to have you in town in about 25 minutes from the Gare de Picquigny stop under 10 minutes' walk away. Closer to home, the Picquigny Equestrian Centre is about a kilometre away for serene Somme canters.
Camping de l'Abîme is a family- and group-friendly site, with amenities including toilets, free hot showers and disabled facilities. There's a snack bar for light eats; cafés and restaurants are a few minutes' walk away in the village. Barbecues are allowed on site.

Lokale attraksjoner
There's a lot to do if you just want to meander around the local countryside: fishing in the Somme from the grounds; canoeing and rafting trips with the assistance of the Picquigny Nautical Base within half a kilometre; horse riding nearby, or tackling the V30 cycle path a couple of hundred metres away.
It's well worth a wander around Picquigny too, to see its seventh-century castle Château de Picquigny, set high on a hill with beaut views down to the surrounding countryside. This splendid château has hosted nobility and royalty including Edward III, Henry IV and the famed Cardinal de Richelieu throughout the centuries: it's now open to the public, so climb up to have a regal look.
Kids should dig the prehistoric living museum Parc Samara a few kilometres away, a vast space next to the Somme and below an Iron Age fort. There are indoor and outdoor reconstructions of prehistoric life and buildings, along with demonstrations of ancient crafts such as blacksmithing and javelin throwing, all covering 600,000 years of human history. Recreational workshops run during school holidays.
By bus or car, have at least a day in spectacular department capital Amiens, to see its Notre-Dame cathedral, famed zoo, Musée de Picardie and the house of Jules Verne among much more: you'll likely want to come back a time or two during your Somme stay.
