Setting your sights on a scenic walking break in the Shropshire Hills? Bag a pitch at Along The Milky Way and you’ll be in prime position to get out along the trails of this lovely rural area. This simple pop-up site sits alongside the river Redlake about 10 minutes’ drive from the towns of Clun (in England) and Knighton (just over the border in Wales). It’s easily accessed from the A488, a couple of minutes’ drive away, and there’s a footpath just across the road from the camping field so you’ll be able to get straight out for strolls. Whether you’re planning to wander along the riverbank, explore some of the Offa’s Dyke Path or amble around the best historic towns in Shropshire, you’ll be well placed at this quiet little site, which is a little bit away from some of the busiest parts of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. Dogs are welcome to join you here as long as they promise to be well behaved around the wildlife that lives on and around the site. Things have been kept simple on site, with just toilets and showers on the facilities front. The real bonus of this approach is that it makes sure there’s no light pollution to spoil your evenings of stargazing – the skies around often have some dazzling displays (hence the name of the site…) Both Clun and Knighton have plenty of amenities to keep you fed and watered – between them they muster several pubs, cafés, takeaways and shops, and Knighton also has a railway station for travels further afield.

Likte: The rural location - when we managed to find it!

Likte ikke: 1 toilet with a shower inside just wasn't enough for the size of the site.
We were plugged into a plughole on an extension reel fixed to a fence which therefore wasn't very safe.
The shower at 20p for 3 mins didn't leave much time after adjusting the temperature & therefore needed to get out & put in at least another 20p!

Likte: Beautiful site, wonderful owners, the little honesty shop has lots of essentials you might have forgotten and the toilet/shower has been really nicely put together. The views from the site are also stunning, as were some of the local attractions and walks.

I would definitely return, but would try to avoid when the site is at maximum capacity.

Likte ikke: The camping field itself is very small, too small for the current capacity when it's full - you can just about squeeze in the tents and the cars but you're not spaced out. Whilst it's lovely to see kids playing, when there are balls/foam airplanes/projectiles hitting the tents and cars, it isn't very appropriate, and the site is not large enough for these types of toys. Whilst I wouldn't recommend not allowing children, it should be noted that the site is meant to be small and peaceful and children should be able to respect this.

There is also only one toilet which has the shower in the same hut, so if someone else is showering you are unable to go to the loo. The shower is 20p for 3 minutes which is not an excessive time to wait but by the time someone has showered and got dressed afterwards, if you were bursting for the loo you might struggle - it might be handy to have the two separate or to have an additional loo if at all possible.

Likte: Hello, me and my partner went in may and this was our first time camping together, well what can I say , absolutely beautiful site, picturesque scenery, met the owners Jack and mandy, they are the most loverly couple, nothing was too much for them. They would periodically check in with you and we would often end up having long chats. Perfect for couples or families looking to relax, walk, see wildlife. Loved it so much we instantly booked for August so we can take my youngest son. Nightime sky blew my mind, I never knew there was that many stars.

Likte: We were warmly welcomed and shown around by the owners on our arrival, throughout our stay they checked we were OK, nothing was too much trouble. There is no phone signal (ID network) but the owners provided the WIFI code on arrival (there was no extra charge) The area is amazing, so peaceful with lots of wildlife. The bathroom was stocked with plenty of loo roll, soap and a clean towel aswell as sanitary items (great that this was thought of, its the 1st site we've been too that has done this and we've been to many). The shower operates on 20p (for 5 minutes) the owners even left a few 20ps incase you arrived without. There's a small outside shop with honesty box selling fire supplies, biscuits, squash, shower gel, flannels, scourers...the essentials that you're likely to forget! Firepits are available too. We walked into Clun, it took about 1 h 30 mins along a very quiet country lane. The night sky was amazing, there's no light disturbance so stars galore. Lovely small site, we will be back.

Lokale attraksjoner

There are plenty of options for walks in this area, whether you choose to stay local or head out to a hotspot like Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (40 minutes’ drive). The Offa’s Dyke Path is a popular trail too, and you can find out more about it at the Offa’s Dyke Centre in Knighton (10 minutes). As well as country rambles, the area has some lovely urban strolls. You may like to start in Clun (10 minutes) to see the 15th-century packhorse bridge and the ruins of Clun Castle. Hopton Castle (20 minutes) and Stokesay Castle (25 minutes) are also worth visiting, and the latter is close to the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre (25 minutes), a useful hub of information and activities. Shrewsbury (an hour) is a pretty town to wander around, but if you don’t want to drive that far you may prefer Ludlow (35 minutes) – it’s got a splendid medieval castle and has developed a reputation as a foodie hotspot thanks to its market, indie food businesses and annual food festival.
