When days by the sea beckon, Fornells is but five minutes’ drive away, with its hidden rocky cove and yacht harbour to have a wander around. Accessed by steep steps down the cliffside, Platja Fonda is a quiet pebble choice for those days when you’re not keen on company, while the sandy expanse at Aiguablava (both also five minutes) has shallow water with safe swimming for novice kids. If you’re all beached out, treat younger offspring to a day on the gaily painted carousels and gentle slides at Pp’s Park Platja d’Aro (25 minutes), or get their little legs working on the climb up to 16th-century Castell de Begur (10 minutes) for spectacular views over the coves and bays of the Mediterranean coastline. Urban days out can include a trip to Barcelona (90 minutes, best for older kids) to marvel at the rainbow-coloured interior of Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Família and watch street artists along Las Ramblas boulevard. Closer to base camp is Girona (55 minutes), where most kids will enjoy seeing the surrealist sculptures in Parc de les Ribes del Ter or walking the ancient ramparts wrapping around the historic city centre.
