Budva has a well-equipped pebble beach with watersports rentals and an inflatable adventure course. At the western end of the beach is the fortified Budva Citadel, the oldest parts of which date back from the fifth century BC. This area includes the Church of Saint John the Baptist, with its distinctive bell tower. Sitting at the southern end of a deep fjord-like bay, Kotor (25 minutes' drive) has a long history and many attractive buildings – from Romanesque churches such as Saint Tryphon’s Cathedral to Renaissance palaces. The wooded hills around the city are laced with hiking trails with far-reaching coastal views. A former military base for the Austrian Empire, Tivat (half an hour), on the Bay of Kotor, has reinvented itself as a glamorous pitstop for the jet set and their yachts. The Monastery of St. Michael the Archangel sits on lush Prevlaka Island, and there are more pretty country churches in the hills around the town.
