What’s the most important thing to know about Camping Italia Lido? Well, it’s the lakeside location, of course – this Piedmont site is in a truly outstanding spot right on the southern shore of Lake Maggiore, with a private beach area and gorgeous lake views. The folk that run this place could have simply relied on that location to attract guests – but they’ve not done that at all, instead putting plenty of effort into making sure the excellent setting is backed up by equally excellent facilities. And that starts with the lake itself, where you can not only swim from the sandy beach but also hire paddleboards and jump around on the inflatable assault course. For those who don’t fancy a dip in the lake, there’s a cool swimming pool on a floating platform, with sun loungers for nice lazy afternoons. Back over on dry land there’s a play area, a sports court, a cosy bar and a waterside restaurant with a wonderful lake backdrop. In high season, lovable mascot Gerry Duck leads various kids’ activities around the site – either at the dedicated kids’ club area, at the beach or at the sports are for fun tournaments. Practicalities are well sorted here, too – guests have access to wifi, a launderette and shared bathrooms with accessible facilities. There’s also a bike hire facility where you can rent wheels to explore further along the lake shore, perhaps to the local town of Castelletto sopra Ticino (the centre of which is about three kilometres away).

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

For your first outing, you might like to head to the pretty lakeside town of Arona (10 minutes’ drive), which has plenty of shops and restaurants as well as the famed Colossus of San Carlo Borromeo, a 35-metre statue that you can go inside. Also very close by is Gottard Park (five minutes), a fun outdoor museum/park with old planes, trains and tractors to see, as well as a large play area with trampolines and a pedal go-kart track. For more lake outings, take a ferry to Rocca di Angera (or drive in 15 minutes) to visit the toys and dolls museum and tour the castle’s elegant interior. The town of Stresa (half an hour) is a must-do as well – for the scenic cable car to Mount Mottarone and boats to Isola Bella, home to a grand baroque palace and fabulous terraced gardens. A little way from the lake’s edge, there are lovely trails for walking and cycling in the Lagoni di Mercurago Natural Park (10 minutes). Alternatively, you could have a complete change of scenery and take a day out in Milan (45 minutes).
