Looking for a laid-back Campania hideaway tucked into abundant gardens – and preferably near a beach (or two)? Haste ye away to Villaggio Glamping La Francesca Sud, a peaceful and verdant spot on a promontory with spectacular Tyrrhenian Sea views, on the outskirts of coastal hamlet of Scario and in the protected Cilento National Marine Park. Sitting in six hectares of Mediterranean maquis, olive trees and oaks, the accommodation is in triangular wooden cabins, furnished simply with beds, no-frills kitchens and shower rooms. Outside each one is a private garden with seating shaded by trees; the site itself is connected by winding paths through the vegetation. One such trail leads to the restaurant with its sun-trap bar terrace and menu of local zero-miles produce; ordering in advance is appreciated to minimise waste. Close by is the mini-market, a games room and a play area. There’s also access down stone steps to a sundeck, where you can grab a lounger with views over the turquoise sea, while 10 minutes’ walk sees you at pebble Spiaggia della Tragara, with stunning views to mountains around the Gulf of Policastro. As the site owners say, this is not the place to be if you’re looking for bright lights and late-night partying. It’s a spot for dozing in the sun with a good book, paddling in crystal-clear sea and relaxing with family.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Sea taxis depart daily from the eye-catching, multi-coloured port of Scario (five minutes’ drive) to sea caves in the soaring cliffs at Capo Palinuro (40 minutes), or Masseta beaches on the Tyrrhenian coastline that can only be reached by sea. On a longer day trip, you can snorkel and swim in the Cilento National Marine Park’s gorgeous Baia degli Infreschi (an hour). If you prefer to explore on foot, there are many Cilento trails leading through the lush vegetation of the protected park. More adventurous types might fancy hiking through the dramatic Grotte del Bussento (40 minutes, look out for lizards), while families can stroll up to the Fontana Capello (45 minutes) and the waterside picnic spot. And of course the Cilento offers up history too; the Ancient Greek ruins of Paestum (an hour and 10 minutes) pull in the crowds, as does the vast, UNESCO-listed Certosa di San Lorenzo (45 minutes), a splendid abbey with a maze of courtyards, baroque churches and peaceful cloisters.
