Surrounded by the Gers hills and a 10-minute drive from the nearby town of Fleurance, Le Hameau des Étoiles is a truly stellar site. It's just as gorgeous by night around here as it is during the day, so the canny folk that run this place have taken advantage of the low light pollution around these parts and built their very own observatory – trot over there after dark to join the resident astronomer for a 45-minute show that lets guests gaze through the roof of the dome and out into the night sky beyond.
More down-to-earth but equally jolly times can be spent with the site's high-season activities, which tend to include guided hikes, quiz nights, disco evenings and food tours. Direct access to the next-door lake means guests can also spend time fishing or canoeing on site, and there’s plenty of scope to take woodland strolls around the 42 hectares of grounds too. Kids’ and teens’ club activities are laid on throughout the summer, with an outdoor pool for cooling off in and a playground on hand to keep the younger travellers busy.
For eats, guests can grab a table at the restaurant or sign up for the sociable themed meals that take place a couple of times a week in high season. There’s also the option of cooking your own meals, of course, as each lodge has a kitchen area to prep food in; other handy features include beds that are made up for your arrival, a private bathroom and a shaded terrace with outdoor furniture for alfresco meals.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden
Gers is one of France's most important agricultural regions, and although much of the landscape is rolling farmland, there are plenty of châteaux and forests to keep things varied. The nearest big town is Auch (25 minutes' drive), a handsome medieval town with half-timbered houses and a cathedral.
Royally good times can be had, for example, at the Château de Sérillac (10 minutes' drive), the Château of the Armagnac Counts (20 minutes) or the Château de Gramont (25 minutes). There's a certain buzz about this last place, in no small part thanks to the fact that it's also home to a honey museum.
Saint-Clar Animal Park (20 minutes) is home to beasts of burden that wouldn't be out of place on the farms that dot the Gers landscape, but guests here will also spot more exotic species, including kangaroos. Stick around in Saint-Clar if you need to let off a bit of steam: there's a leisure centre here for swimming, slides and outdoor games. For further kid-pleasing times, head to Happy Forest Adventure Park (50 minutes).
