Family holiday dream scenario: there's so much for the kids to do that they'll never have a chance to get bored, and they'll be so worn out they sleep really well (thus allowing parents some time to chill out). That’s the aim of the game at Camping Les Ourmes, in the Gironde countryside between the town of Hourtin and the shores of Lac d’Hourtin-Carcans. This is a place that's packed with activities – there’s a play area, a multisports field, an outdoor fitness area and facilities for games of table tennis, pétanque and padel. On top of all that, summer guests have a busy programme of activities to choose from, with sessions for kids, teenagers and adults. However, the highlight for many visitors is the aquatic area, with a heated main pool and a paddling pool/water play area for the younger ones – all surrounded by a spacious sun terrace with plenty of sun loungers and parasols. And if that's not enough activity yet, there's more watery fun to be had at the lake's beach (10 minutes' walk) or over at the ocean (10 minutes' drive). Bikes can be hired on site to get to either of these, or to explore the 150 kilometres of cycle paths that run through the surrounding Médoc Regional Natural Park. Evenings bring a chance to relax after all the excitement of whichever way you chose to fill your day – you may like to cook a leisurely meal with bits sourced from the site's grocery shop, grab a takeaway or settle in at the restaurant /bar, which is open throughout the day for meals and drinks. There’s also entertainment in the form of concerts, wine tastings, games and the like.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

You won't have to go far to find yet more activity – Children's Island (15 minutes' walk) is a good place to start, with play areas galore, trampolines and a madcap floating inflatable course on the water. Canoeing, windsurfing and paddleboarding are among the watersports at the lake (10 minutes' walk), and a horse riding centre and the LabyMédoc corn maze are five minutes' drive away. The park is located within the Médoc Regional Natural Park, so there are lots of walks to be done nearby, through forests and dunes or along the banks of the lake. And of course this is an area that’s known for its wine, with more than 60 châteaux – many of which you can visit for a tasting. Time to stay still for a while? Head to one of the local beaches for a day of sand and swimming – perhaps nearby Hourtin Plage (15 minutes’ drive) or the Belle Époque resort of Soulac-sur-Mer (40 minutes).
