Seeking a serene Somerset stay? Have a hassle-free hol at Haselbury Mill, on a cracking 14-acre estate five minutes from Crewkerne. This is a place with quite a chunk of history behind it – the original buildings date all the way back (way, way back) to the times of William the Conqueror. The glamping units, in a gorgeous little glade by the Parrett river, are from days of yore too (although they’re very much of the vintage variety rather than the ancient). The wagons here are traditional numbers, collected in a quiet corner and cleverly restored to hang on to the best of their retro features while upping the comfort factor by throwing in some modern bits and bobs, including tea and coffee making facilities (vital for those who simply can’t function until they’ve had their morning cuppa.) Smart modern toilet and shower facilities are housed in another wagon parked up in the same spacious clearing. Need more than a cup of tea to get you going of a morning? Sorted: a generous breakfast is provided for all glamping guests, and served up a short walk away in the main mill. With any luck that’ll see you through your days out (hiking, beachcombing or gadding about in Glastonbury, perhaps) until it’s time to come back and settle in once again for evening drinks and a meal. Bag a table by the lakeside restaurant’s glass wall for dinner with a view, or potter over to the site’s pub for woodfired pizzas and pies to accompany pints of local ale or cider.

Inspired by all the bits of the past on display around the estate? There’s plenty more nearby. On a rather grander scale than your digs (fab though they are) are the smart stately homes of Montacute House, a Tudor pile with gorgeous formal gardens (15 minutes’ drive) and Barrington Court, home to a walled garden and orchard (20 minutes). Orchards are a fairly common sight around these parts, and their offerings go towards creating the famed Somerset cider. Sample a sip or several at Burrow Hill Cider (20 minutes) – they’ve been pressing the stuff for more than 200 years so they know a thing or two. If you fancy a snifter of something stronger, their cider brandy is worth trying too. Burrow further back in history with a trip to Glastonbury Tor (half an hour) to hear tales of King Arthur and Excalibur; or delve into the age of the dinosaurs down at the Jurassic Coast. Charmouth beach (half an hour) still harbours ancient fossils, for those who know where to look (and that’d be in the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre if you’re not lucky with seeking out your own).

Ik was blij met: We have been to this place 4 times now ,so obviously we like it . It is ideal for our dog, and you get a lovely breakfast in the morning.

Ik was blij met: This was our 3rd stay at Haselbury Mill in less than 2 years , and like the previous visits we absolutely loved it We stayed in the vintage Montecute caravan . It is such a great place to getaway , with good dog walks nearby , and nice places to visit .
The facilities are great, with a lovely restaurant and bar ,that serves a delicious breakfast.
We will be back again soon !!

Ik was blij met: We had the best stay in The Montacute (showman’s van) - it’s something different and we all loved it. Haselbury Mill is perfect - the atmosphere is lovely and ALL staff were very friendly. The breakfast (included) is unbelievably super, the sausages were a particular hit. We had Pizza’s at The Windy Miller - so so good. My son (7) finished a whole pizza - to the surprise of all the waiting staff, so that’s how good he thought they were!

Ik was niet zo blij met: We didn’t dislike anything at all. Just a little reminder that if you plan on eating in your van you will need plates and cutlery (cups, glasses and teaspoons are provided). Also a dressing gown for the morning - as a little chilly first thing.
