If you quite fancy the idea of wild camping but aren’t sure you’ll take to the idea of abandoning such things as toilets, there's a great compromise to be had in the form of Camp Wild at Burrow Hill Farm. This secluded site on a Devon hillside has all the atmosphere of a proper wild camping location: it’s completely off grid (so you’ll need to bring torches), with just a couple of large pitches and well away from any roads. You can pick your own camping spot here, but as the pitches are not accessible by car your kit will be transported for you. After that, you’re left to your own devices to forage for wood, build your campfire, or explore the footpaths that can be accessed from the farm. You’ll be sharing your space with lots of wildlife, so sit or stroll quietly and you may spot badgers and deer in the field or buzzards, ravens and swallows in the sky overhead. And even if you’re not lucky on that front, there’s many a pretty thing to see among the wildflowers, the hedgerows and the woodlands. Later on, the dark skies lend themselves well to nights of stargazing, and you may see the bats at play in the woods or hear the odd owl hooting. And those amenities? There’s a portable toilet, a solar shower tent and a camping kitchen unit for each pitch, and you can get water from a spring (piped from the main house supply). There's also an electric vehicle charging point available for use on a metered basis. All the bits you need for your barbecue or campfire can be sourced at the supermarket in Hemyock, a mile away along the footpath or lane (it’s also got a pub if you’d rather have your food cooked for you…)

  • Auto's/motoren zijn niet toegestaan op de staplaats/bij de accommodatie. Deze moeten worden geparkeerd op de daarvoor bestemde plekken.
  • Deze camping ontvangt alleen gezinnen (directe familieleden) en koppels; reserveringen van andere groepen worden niet aangenomen.
  • Minstens één lid van het gezelschap dient 21 of ouder te zijn.
  • Minimumafstand van 25 meter tussen de staplaatsen.
  • Dit is een rustige plek: muziek is strikt verboden.
  • Het wordt gasten geadviseerd om een zaklantaarn van goede kwaliteit mee te nemen, omdat delen van het terrein onverlicht zijn.
  • Zwemmen in het meer is niet toegestaan.
  • Unfortunately this site does not suit those who have mobility issues.

Ik was blij met: Thank you so much for such a lovely stay. Everything was perfect for the two nights we were there. The campsite overlooks the most fabulous views & we had a picnic bench, fire pit & outdoor kitchen area with tap, along with a pop up privacy tent, solar shower & camping toilet all provided. The pitch is surrounded by nature, with fields, meadows & woods all available to explore. We saw deer & bats & waking up to nothing but bird song was amazing. Very peaceful location, with everything we needed. Christopher & Caroline were exceptional hosts, telling us about the wildlife and local walks we could do. Great location for hikes to Wellington Monument or Culmstock Beacon which are both beautiful places to visit. Great local pub & shop about twenty minutes walk. Would highly recommend & we will definitely be back. Thank you

Ik was blij met: This was our first family camping trip and wow what an experience. Every single one of us (kids aged 2,7 &10) didn’t want to leave Camp Wild. We camped at the top of the hill which was a short stomp up a steep path. Wow what incredible views! We were fortunate enough to have the best view for both sun rise & sunset.

We stayed for three nights and absolutely loved it. We walked in both directions of the footpath which is situated by camp and even went on a 5km Geocache trial locally. We built fires which the kids say wad their favourite part as they foraged the wood themselves from our surroundings. Perfect.

The owners were very helpful and anything we needed they were in hand, logs, freezing of our ice blocks and even taking our stuff to and from the camp.

The farm itself has its own wildlife including pony’s and horses and we saw wild foxes, deer and birds galore. What a treasure this place is.
If you’re looking for a wild camping experience, this place is what you’re looking for. We promise you won’t be disappointed! See you again next year!

Ik was blij met: Amazing views and very friendly attentive hosts. There are only 2 camping pitches available one at the bottom and one at the top of a large hill. We were at the top with the fantastic view. The pitch has a picnic bench and pop up tent with a chemical toilet which is emptied daily by the site owner. They also replaced the 2 water barrels and bins daily and helped us with our belongings taking them up and down the hill. We also left our trailer at the top which was handy to store things in. The site is in walking distance from town which has local shops and a pub.

Lots of wildlife to see and hear and the kids had a great time exploring and collecting wood for the fire. We had a lovely stay and would recommend staying if you fancy a wild camping experience with lots of wildlife and amazing views.

Ik was niet zo blij met: The hill was very steep to get up and down, climbing the hill was a struggle especially in the heavy rain with the mud. Our site was sloped with a flatter area under the trees near the back. This area was a walking route/public right of way, which we didn't mind but we felt we shouldn't put the tent here so we were on a slight slope which isn't the best for sleep! We wouldn't advise this site if you don't like the thought of having to climb a steep slope daily (unless you can reserve the lower site). We did had a good time which is why I would recommend it.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Burrow Hill Farm is within the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there are plenty of ways to explore some of the scenery that earned the area its title. Set out straight from your tent to get going on local footpaths, perhaps to the Wellington monument or up to Culmstock Beacon for some smashing views. For walks further afield, head to Exmoor National Park (45 minutes’ drive) or head shore-wards to the South West Coast Path. Burrow Hill is fairly central in Devon so it’s about an hour’s drive to the north coast or 45 minutes south to the fossil-filled Jurassic Coast. Time for a bit of a sit down? Head to the beach in Lyme Regis or Sidmouth or take a ride on the tramway in Seaton (all 40 minutes). Devon Railway Centre and Knightshayes Court (both 35 minutes) are also good ideas for days out nearby, as is a wander around Exeter (40 minutes).
