There's a lot to like about breaks on this working dairy farm near Stafford. For starters, Moors Covert Farm Camping is on the edge of the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a 26-square-mile playground for walkers, cyclists, horse trekkers and outdoor activity types. The site is also next to the Staffordshire Way, so head for this neck of the woods if you're looking to wander far and wide. This back-to-basics spot likes to keep things simple and straightforward. There's ample space on these well-kept grounds for guests and their gear – just turn up with your pals, kids or bikes and let the good times roll. About two miles from base there's also a top-rated pub; head along here to get those good times off to a flying start. The folk that run this place do their best to keep you sweet with their locally produced honey; they also sell free-range eggs and other supplies. Got a taste for home-grown grub? Head to the local farm shop, about a mile away, for more farm-to-fork goodies. There's also a pick-your-own down the road where you can pluck the plumpest-looking pumpkins when they're in season. Looking to stock up at a proper supermarket or grab a takeaway? Drive 15 minutes down the road to get to Stafford city centre.

Ik was blij met: Superb place to stay. Rang the mobile number when I arrived and the owner promptly met us to let us on to the pitches. We were able to choose where we wanted to set up which was convenient. The location is lovely and the on site toilet and charging facilities are undoubtedly useful! Regarding the one review that mentioned the smell of manure - it is a farm and so it isn’t really surprising that there may be the occasional animal smell. During the stay, it was only noticeable when you were close to the cows in their shelter. As our tent was pitched near the bottom, I couldn’t say I noticed a strong smell of manure.

Ik was blij met: Our stay was amazing it’s so peaceful. Able to have a bbq and small fire which a lot of places now don’t allow you to. Children could run on the fields they loved it. Toilets are kept clean. Able to enjoy walking around the dairy cows and the young calf’s. Such an amazing Experience will Deffinatly be back owners are very polite and welcoming even had cake left in the campers kitchen which you could purchase. Could also arrange with owner to go and watch the milking process with the dairy cows.

Ik was blij met: We had a wonderful family camping trip! The grounds are well kept, toilet and kitchen area very clean and were cleaned each morning. Host were welcoming and very friendly. Camping pitch was enclosed making it really safe for our toddler to run freely. We absolutely loved the up close experience of a working farm and being able to walk round and meet the animals (especially the calf’s) - we can’t wait for our next visits!

Ik was blij met: The camping spot boasted views of nature, allowing for a good outdoor experience.

Ik was niet zo blij met: The prevalence of manure throughout the area proved to be a significant drawback. Despite attempts to enjoy the surroundings, the constant presence of poop detracted from the overall enjoyment and comfort of the experience.

Ik was blij met: Great site attended with my 6 year old and some friend with there young children.

The kids could safely run up and down the field as only one access gate.

Facilities were spotless, toilet nice and clean, washing up area and fridge greatly appreciated.

Farmer let us know when milking was taking place and showed us around the farm.

Moors Covert Farm Camping is a peaceful spot, but it's also well connected: Junction 13 of the M6 is close by, making it a doddle to zip from north to south and back again. There's much more to life than shopping – this is the countryside, after all – but when the sales are on at Trentham Shopping Village (30 minutes' drive down the M6) they can be pretty hard to resist. There's also a monkey park here, a little fact that may well help you bribe the kids to come along… For outdoor adventure, make tracks for the off-road Segways for rent at Birches Valley (10 minutes). Here you'll also find a visitor centre to help you get your bearings and a Go Ape where you can survey your surrounds from above. For more time in the open air, grab your rod and make your way over to Calf Heath reservoir (15 minutes), a well-stocked carp lake. There's also a recommended riding stables on the Chase (five minutes) – trot down here if you'd like lessons, treks or just some time in the saddle.
